Time to celebrate what's been a solid year for ComX and all those involved before we celebrate the start of 2022 (which looks to be a much bigger year for ComX) We'll start the show with a flashback to our very first Friday Night Drink & Draw, or as it was called then: ComX Studio's…

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (00:14):
Hello everyone, and I guess goodbye 2021. I’m just here to, we’ve started a bit earlier today. The actual show is at eight o’clock my time, which is in two hours. But what I thought I’d do is revisit for two hours for anyone who’s got the time and inclination to watch the first episode of Drink and Draw back when we didn’t really know what we were doing. I had a good laugh of it last night, so I thought I’d share it with everyone today. It’s not the first show that Comex did, but Drink and Draw has become a bit of a staple to a lot of people. So yeah, I thought it was a good example to show how far we’ve come and have a bit of a laugh at what we were. So I guess with that, I will just press the play button and for the next hour and a half or so you can watch the original show. Enjoy. Hi everyone. Shane here from Comex and we’re doing the drink and draw tonight with, let me see, we’ve got Rob Sp Lyle, ed Kersley, Peter Wilson, Isaac, George Duncan, Vic, Lee Chalker, Alex Major, and Dave Dye. So without any further ado, let’s bring each of them on. Hello Alex.

Alex Major (01:58):
Hello Shane and everybody else. Hello.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:04):
Hello, Lee. Hello, how are you? Hello Dave and hello Ed and that’s all we’ve got. The moment everyone else is having technical issues,

Dave Dye (02:17):
Usually

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:18):
Me. So tonight the theme is, I’ll just bring this picture up, final Dragon. So everyone tonight is drawing something to do with Final Dragon and chatting as we do it. So I guess we can just, while the other guys are coming in, we can just start, oh, here’s Rob again.

Alex Major (02:47):
Hey.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:49):
Yeah, it’s working this time. Yeah, you’re working this time.

Alex Major (02:52):
I’m not the only one. I like the little Dutch angle you’ve got going there. Yeah, artistic. Thanks. I keep it,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:59):
My nose goes off to one side. I can smell around corners, so if I have it on my good angle, my nose looks straight, but then when I look like this, that guy’s been punched in the face a lot.

Alex Major (03:12):
Have you? Yeah,

Dave Dye (03:12):
I’ve got one like that. I

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (03:15):
Got punched in the face once when I was a kid, but it was a good one.

Dave Dye (03:20):
This is from footy? This is from footy, yeah.

Alex Major (03:26):
I haven’t done anything tough. This is an easy life,

Dave Dye (03:33):
Right?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (03:35):
I’m not sure I’ve met you before. Sloppy tunes.

Alex Major (03:39):
No, I’ve been out of the country for 13 years, so I’m back recently to Australia. Yeah, right. I used to do comics in the nineties and then early two thousands when Supernova was still called Comic Fest.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (03:51):
Okay, sure.

Dave Dye (03:54):
Can we start Lauren now? Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (03:58):
I have, sorry, I didn’t mean be rude. I just thought we were on the clock.

Dave Dye (04:06):
Everyone

Alex Major (04:07):
Cool.

Dave Dye (04:17):
Bloody,

Leigh Chalker (04:20):
Oh, tallies. That’s the go.

Dave Dye (04:22):
They

Leigh Chalker (04:23):
Go too hot up here though. In north Queensland, I tell you,

Dave Dye (04:26):
I asked for the biggest bottle in the whole shop. Nice.

Alex Major (04:31):
So who’s in north Queensland?

Leigh Chalker (04:34):
Me, that’s

Dave Dye (04:35):
Lee.

Alex Major (04:36):
Oh, Lee. Oh, you go. My mum lives up in Cairnes, so I used to go there.

Leigh Chalker (04:41):
Yeah, right. Yeah. Did you like the tropical North?

Alex Major (04:45):
I liked the diving part. The other part I, no, I didn’t really, I, it was like how it is with your mom. It’s not the most exciting part. She’s all right.

Dave Dye (04:58):
Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (04:58):
Yeah, no, fair enough. Man,

Alex Major (05:01):
I didn’t go out much. I didn’t go. I just did family stuff there because she’s from, she moved up there from Sydney.

Leigh Chalker (05:10):
Boy, that’s a big fucking change mate. I tell you, coming from Sydney to Cairnes now. Good. That’s a brave woman. But

Alex Major (05:21):
She actually lived someplace between Port Douglas and Cairns in Newell Beach.

Leigh Chalker (05:26):
Yeah, right. Okay. Yeah. Yep. Yeah, I think I’ve been through there. I went up into the Daintree a couple of years ago with a mate and did all the four wheel driving and flood waters and stayed at all the croc infested camps that are up there. Man, there’s some really nice spots, I’ll tell you. Unbelievable. Have you had a chance to go up there, do it?

Alex Major (05:52):
Yeah, we did do all the touristy stuff. I did go up the dain tree and then also went to a bunch of kangaroo places as well, and a lot of people speak Japanese there when I was there. This, I was late 2007, I was there last time, so

Leigh Chalker (06:16):
Probably a bit more modernised now, man, because North Queensland’s got internet and shit now, so

Alex Major (06:22):
I can’t imagine you

Leigh Chalker (06:23):
Can take pre bookings as opposed to people just rock up on their doorstep like, man, I’ve been out bush for a week. I need somewhere to stay. Come into this health resort and see the butterflies and that’s all that stuff goes on up there. But hey, that’s cool. Whatever. You’re into me.

Alex Major (06:42):
Oh yeah, the butterflies. Yeah, I did go see the butterfly thing there and they also had this little Port Douglas, they had all the cane toad races as well.

Leigh Chalker (06:51):
Yeah, yeah. Quality stuff, mate.

Dave Dye (06:55):
We’ll be doing that soon. The codes are coming down here. I heard heading down. Yeah, they’re

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (07:01):
Getting more and more south every year, I think.

Dave Dye (07:03):
Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (07:05):
Mate, those things are the ugliest things ever. And you can’t keep pet food down or anything. You’ll come out in the middle of the night and there’s this big cane table the size of your head, like sitting in a bloody bowl of dog food and stuff, and you’re like, oh,

Dave Dye (07:30):
Sister used to live in Bundy, Bundaberg on a five acre block out of town there. And at night, the bloom and cane toads, summertime was when they’d be very active and you’d be sitting there watching telly and the cantos would be jumping up against the window, catching the flies and stuff. The insects at night. You just hear the constant flap flap as they’re fighting over insects,

Leigh Chalker (08:06):
Mate. Disgusting creatures. Yeah, I’m pro animal and stuff and good on them, but no, they do bad things to dogs too, mate.

Dave Dye (08:23):
Oh, here we go.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (08:23):
We’ve got someone.

Leigh Chalker (08:25):
Yeah,

Alex Major (08:26):
Somebody’s coming in.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (08:27):
Yep. Duncan.

Alex Major (08:28):
Oh, you go Duncan’s back

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (08:31):
And he doesn’t seem to have a camera.

Alex Major (08:37):
We call that pulling a Jerome.

Leigh Chalker (08:46):
Good on you, Rob. Rob, I haven’t met you yet, man, but I’ve got to say I sit down in the granny flat, particularly last evening, was it? And with Tam, my Mrs. We were listening to those interviews last night. She’s the one that said, you’ve got me in stitches and you said, I don’t think I’m the man to see. I should probably go to a doctor or something to that effect. And geez, we chuckled, Ben. That was a fun show last night being part of that because that was very funny. Indeed.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (09:24):
Yeah, it’s weird. Yeah, you said we haven’t met and I just Yeah, you’re right, we haven’t, but I’ve watched so many of the live streams and stuff that you’ve been on and I’ve read Battle for Bustle and I just assumed we had met, but of course we never have.

Leigh Chalker (09:38):
No, we have not, mate, bill, it’s nice to meet you anyway, even through this cyber, I suppose, infused bloody thing, but hey, beauty of technology is none of us would’ve ever met, none of these occasions would’ve ever reared their head and hooray for modern tech and that’s excellent to see your stuff. I actually really like all your work, man. The whole lot of you. I do actually jump on the internet every now and then and sort of look at what you’re pumping out and stuff like that, so you’re all very talented. So

Dave Dye (10:27):
That goes both ways, mate.

Leigh Chalker (10:29):
Thank you Dave. Mate. Mate, you’re a champion too. You’re a bloody legend. I’ve been looking at this stuff you are pumping out and good Lord mate, like you’re a machine.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (10:38):
Yeah, Dave,

Dave Dye (10:39):
Mate, you’re putting the mockers on me now. I’m going to tell you stick figure

Leigh Chalker (10:46):
Perhaps. That’s part of my plan, Dave.

Dave Dye (10:54):
Well, while we’re all together, I’d just like to say one thing that I don’t know if you’re aware of, but SP has got a musical background you’ve mentioned that want to get onto his web page and go and listen to his music. It’s bloody brilliant. Oh right,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (11:22):
Wow.

Dave Dye (11:24):
Is that you singing name?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (11:26):
Yeah.

Dave Dye (11:27):
You’ve got three brilliant albums there and I love them.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (11:31):
Oh wow. Thanks man.

Dave Dye (11:33):
What was

Leigh Chalker (11:34):
The name of your band mate?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (11:36):
Mighty Boy was the name of my band back in the day. I mean, I was in a band called, was in a band called the Doggy Paddle Scandal cover band called the Brians, but my main band was the Mighty Boy. Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (11:49):
Yeah, right. That’s cool, man. Well done.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (11:53):
Cheers. Yeah, I wasn’t sure, so it was obviously your lady that said in the chat like, Rob, you were in a band, weren’t you? And I wasn’t sure. I was like, oh, do I mention it too much?

Leigh Chalker (12:10):
Oh man. It’s just a little personal joke that me and Tam had because I’ve watched you a couple of times that you talked about you being in a band, but I kept saying to Tam, he never tells me the name of the bloody band, so that’s why I was like, when I got you like, Rob, please tell me the name of your band.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (12:28):
But it always goes the same way. It’s like, oh, the band was mighty boy and everyone just does that because no one’s heard of it,

Dave Dye (12:35):
That blank look. Oh yeah, right. Yeah.

Leigh Chalker (12:42):
Did you enjoy your time playing music and stuff?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (12:46):
Oh yeah. Yes and no. I mean, yeah, I only remember the good times, which is probably the good way to look at it. There were ups and downs.

Leigh Chalker (12:59):
Do you like drawing more?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (13:03):
Do I like it more? Probably there’s no setup time, there’s no carting stuff around the city. Yeah. Late nights I just have to walk over to where my bed is. I don’t have to drive home and with ringing ears and all that sort of stuff.

Leigh Chalker (13:20):
Next question

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (13:22):
For rock,

Leigh Chalker (13:22):
Things you’ve got in the background, are they comic books or are they

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (13:27):
Dvs all or whatever? Yeah, that all comic No, it’s comics. Yeah.

Leigh Chalker (13:29):
Oh, they’re all like trade paperbacks and stuff

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (13:33):
And then there’s boxes, boxes all across there and across there it’s a bit of a mess if you look too closely. But that’s

Alex Major (13:41):
That’s a pretty solid

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (13:42):
Collection there.

Alex Major (13:43):
Yeah.

Leigh Chalker (13:44):
Yeah. That’s collection. You’re all falling into my plan.

Alex Major (13:55):
All my comics are in.

Dave Dye (13:57):
Oh, you’re all digital with that, Alex?

Alex Major (14:01):
Yeah, because I’ve been living out of a suitcase, so I can’t carry, had to give up. When I left Australia, I had to give up all my DVDs and my games, my comic, I had three or four massive boxes of comics, not, which for Rob is like, man, it’s about 3% of his collection. I had to donate that away because I was just living from one country to another and then now I’m back. But Peter, oh, Peter’s back.

Dave Dye (14:30):
Hey bro.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (14:31):
Hey. Yeah, I’m

Dave Dye (14:32):
Here man. How are we doing? We’re still here. Awesome. Good to see you

Leigh Chalker (14:35):
Peter.

Alex Major (14:37):
Admiring Rob. Hey, comic collection.

Dave Dye (14:41):
That’s ridiculous. Look at it. I thought mine was good.

Leigh Chalker (14:48):
Hey, question Rob. What’s out of all of that? You’ve got there mate. What is the one that really all jam in there for you?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (15:01):
Wider Last man is my favourite comic. They’re the white ones just there at the end, but it’s annoying. I’m not huge. I like keeping my stuff nice, but I’m not, everything needs to be 9.8 sort of guy, but volume five of why Last Man. I bought it brand new, but there’s a page with a rip in it with a chunk ripped off and man, it bothers me. I haven’t read it for years, but I just,

Dave Dye (15:32):
People

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (15:32):
Are like, what do you love most about one Last man? And the first thing that comes to mind is that torn page and I was just talking about remembering the good things, but I don’t know why I keep focusing on that, but

Dave Dye (15:43):
There you go. What’s it called, mate? What’s the title?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (15:46):
Why the Last Man? It’s a story about

Isaac George (15:50):
K isn’t

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (15:51):
It? It’s Y

Dave Dye (15:52):
Letter.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (15:54):
Yeah. Why the letter Y? The Last Man.

Dave Dye (15:58):
Oh, why the Last Man? Right. Okay,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (16:01):
I’ll grab it.

Isaac George (16:03):
I think it’s by Brian. He

Dave Dye (16:06):
That’s right. So how did you find it so fast?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (16:09):
Yeah,

Dave Dye (16:10):
He is his favourite I suppose, but it was just like you had this prepared,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (16:18):
So the guy and he’s the last man on earth

Dave Dye (16:22):
And who wrote it? Who’s the work worked on?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (16:26):
Brian K. Vaughn is the writer and Pierre Guerrera is the artist.

Dave Dye (16:33):
And what’s the art like mate?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (16:35):
Oh, the art’s great. It’s really great.

Dave Dye (16:38):
And it’s from, it’s one of those European jobs, is it?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (16:42):
It’s American.

Dave Dye (16:44):
Oh, right, Yankee

Leigh Chalker (16:45):
Dude, that’s like image or dark horse, isn’t it? From memory?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (16:50):
Vertigo.

Leigh Chalker (16:51):
Vertigo. That was going to be a God. They’ve been pushing that for years to be a movie or a bloody TV show, but no one can nail down the story

Dave Dye (17:14):
Supposedly. It’s on its way. Oh cool.

Leigh Chalker (17:18):
I hope so.

Dave Dye (17:21):
What do you mean? As long as they don’t creature, it should be fine.

Isaac George (17:28):
Netflix came through and bought a whole bunch of stuff. They bought Black Magic, they bought old Dar

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (17:39):
Devil’s toilet.

Dave Dye (17:51):
Did you do the Devil’s Toilet? Did you Rob?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (17:55):
Yeah, no, that’s

Dave Dye (17:56):
Mine.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (18:01):
Well, I don’t know how you suckered me in. I was just watching the live stream with you and Shane the other day and you had it. I was stoked to see you had it sitting in there.

Dave Dye (18:11):
I thought you might have a spare cover there to just hold up the screen.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (18:21):
Funnily enough, I didn’t prepare that well, I would,

Dave Dye (18:26):
I just looked,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (18:28):
I thought I had battle for Bustle sitting here too, but it’s actually in my bedroom next.

Leigh Chalker (18:32):
See, I would’ve loved you even more mate if you would’ve busted that out.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (18:38):
It’s in my bedroom because it’s on my bedside table where I read it.

Leigh Chalker (18:42):
You know what? It’s funny, but 90% of people that tell me they’ve bought the comic always say the same thing. It’s on their bedside table.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (18:56):
I’d yell out for my wife to get it, but she’d be like, what the hell are you talking about?

Leigh Chalker (19:04):
It’s funny.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (19:07):
No, I was just going to say, imagine I had to describe the cover to her. It’s the one with the all

Dave Dye (19:11):
The,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (19:13):
It’s like how do you put that cover into words?

Leigh Chalker (19:18):
I dunno. I dunno how the fuck that cover came out of me either, man, but oh, Gary says to me one night again, he is like, mate, you need a cover. And I said like, oh, okay. And I was doing a lot of painting at the time and I just sort of whacked that out and I still to this day, don’t think Gary is a hundred percent behind it, but Oh, it is what it is, man.

Dave Dye (19:46):
I got the black and white cover.

Leigh Chalker (19:49):
Oh yeah, well that man, that cover was actually done by Jardine, so I actually, I could walk over off camera now and get the original artwork for you and show you because it’s like, man, yeah, it’s a nice piece of artwork. Yeah, I’m very proud to Oh no way

Dave Dye (20:14):
In

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (20:16):
Work in progress. Looking nice.

Dave Dye (20:18):
Oh wow. Alright.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (20:20):
Did you get a head start, Zach? Oh golly, I’m way behind. No,

Alex Major (20:24):
Zach’s been quiet and not talking to everybody he’s been doing. I’ve just been, I don’t know, I’m still, where is this? Where does this work? This how this work? There

Dave Dye (20:34):
You go. Oh yeah, Alex, sorry Ed. Oh yeah, coming along nice.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (20:49):
So mine is him pulling a hamstring because if you remember the cover,

Dave Dye (20:56):
The

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (20:56):
Cover for the first Comex, he’s doing that.

Dave Dye (21:00):
Hey, what

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (21:02):
The cover for the Comex presents where

Dave Dye (21:05):
He’s doing the big kick.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (21:06):
He’s doing the big kick. Yeah, so I’m doing the aftermath of that kick where his hamstring

Isaac George (21:15):
Karate kick balancing on the,

Dave Dye (21:22):
I got balancing

Alex Major (21:23):
Sideways. Pretty impressive puts Daniel the shame.

Dave Dye (21:34):
Oh, I heard my name. What was that?

Alex Major (21:36):
Sorry, not Daniel. Whatever. The credit kid doesn’t matter. Anyways, go on, move on, move on. This joke didn’t work. I tried it out, threw it out there, it didn’t work. Move on.

Dave Dye (21:50):
Righto. Move along, move right along there.

Alex Major (21:54):
Just try out new materials. Sorry guys.

Isaac George (21:58):
Do remember from the karate kid him being bossed around to clean Mr. Miyagi’s house and him climbing to state the Bon, ID be my only recollection of all of that franchise.

Dave Dye (22:13):
You don’t remember.

Alex Major (22:15):
I recently watched the one where had nothing to do with karate. The one where he went to China, the remake and completely the writers and everybody was super lazy instead of having all these little creative things like in the original movie where he is cleaning the car, doing the fence and then he just learns karate. He just repeats the one thing, he puts a jacket up and then throws it on the ground, picks it up, and he does that for about 20 minutes literally. And I was like,

Dave Dye (22:44):
Sounds like an awesome movie.

Alex Major (22:46):
No, it wasn’t good. He gets a three out of 14

Dave Dye (22:55):
Three

Alex Major (22:58):
Specific. I don’t

Dave Dye (23:01):
No decimal coins.

Alex Major (23:03):
No, no, no, no, no. This was just straight on bang on. Three out of 14.

Dave Dye (23:09):
Okay, excellent. What’s that accent, Alex?

Alex Major (23:17):
I think most of that is expat living in China and speaking to a lot of Americans there, but some of it is Hungarian because I came to Australia when I was 14, so sorry, I

Dave Dye (23:31):
Would’ve picked it as European.

Alex Major (23:33):
Yeah, it’s bit of you’re a trash.

Dave Dye (23:38):
You said it not us. It used to

Alex Major (23:42):
Be the show. I used to watch it when cable first came, when Foxdale first came and they had Euro trash and Anna Jean Paul Goer was hosting it and he was just showing just gross stuff in Europe. I remember it was on, I forgot what channel it was on Foxdale when it was first they only had 20 channels or something thing. So you guys all from Queensland or

Dave Dye (24:10):
No? No, all around Australia. All around Australia.

Alex Major (24:14):
So anybody else from Sydney or I’m waving the Sydney flow.

Peter Wilson (24:18):
Newcastle.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (24:20):
I am originally from Russia

Dave Dye (24:22):
From Really? From who? Newcastle.

Peter Wilson (24:29):
Newcastle. That’s me.

Dave Dye (24:31):
You Pete Nova cast. That’s

Peter Wilson (24:36):
Right. Only recently, the last few years. The central coast before.

Dave Dye (24:42):
Oh right. Gosford or

Peter Wilson (24:45):
That’s right.

Dave Dye (24:46):
Not Bji.

Peter Wilson (24:51):
Gosford where angel spear to tread because they’ll get mugged

Dave Dye (24:58):
Without any shark attacks up there lately.

Peter Wilson (25:02):
We don’t bother documenting them anymore.

Dave Dye (25:04):
Oh yeah. Scare away the

Peter Wilson (25:06):
Happens.

Dave Dye (25:07):
Yeah. Who just dropped out? Oh no, Lee and he’s back again.

Alex Major (25:13):
Oh, there you go.

Dave Dye (25:16):
Probably Will went for a smoke.

Leigh Chalker (25:19):
I was a magician in the past life.

Dave Dye (25:29):
Now this bloke wears the old gym boots. I had a pair of them when I was a kid. Yeah, the old Chuck Taylors. But these are pink. It’s supposed to be red. Red is it? Yeah. Oh, okay. They never came in blue when I was a kid. What did you call him?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (25:56):
Red wasn’t invented yet. Was it

Dave Dye (25:58):
Dave?

Alex Major (26:04):
When was red invented like 2003?

Dave Dye (26:08):
I can’t remember. I think that he Marks invented was it was Starlin, bloody Commies.

Leigh Chalker (26:21):
I remember watching at Doco on the Spanish Inquisition at one point and the artwork that came out of that, they said that the reason why the portraits were so dark, and if you do look at ’em, if you ever have a gander or see something you do notice, they’re like, man, they’re really black on the outside and come in, if you know what I mean. White dark colours. And they said, because they still hadn’t discovered things like yellows and reds that would mix with the colours. I don’t know if that is a hundred percent correct, but I watched that docker so God knows what they’re teaching me on a B, c

Alex Major (27:09):
Propaganda stuff. No colours in Spain.

Dave Dye (27:17):
Well Goya did a lot of dark things but didn’t he during the Inquisition?

Leigh Chalker (27:23):
Yeah. Yeah. Oh that’s man. Imagine the time that would go into that sort of stuff like wow,

Dave Dye (27:35):
I didn’t think we’d be getting this high brow. I’ve only got one eyebrow mate, so I can’t get

Leigh Chalker (27:44):
Any higher.

Alex Major (27:48):
Wasn’t that the guy smoking a cigarette and drinking actual alcohol is the one they’re making all the intelligent topics.

Leigh Chalker (27:56):
Well

Dave Dye (27:59):
Let’s

Alex Major (27:59):
Go back to the shark attacks. What’s up with them?

Dave Dye (28:04):
It

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (28:04):
Must have been bloody hard to admit to being an artist. I mean it’s hard enough admitting to it now all your mates are talking footy and Oh, I built a house on the weekend and I’m like, oh yeah, I drew a toilet.

Dave Dye (28:16):
You

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (28:17):
Go back to ancient Rome and they’re like, oh, we just fought off the French again. They’re like, oh, I just drew a picture on the roof of the cathedral

Dave Dye (28:24):
Of the toilet.

Leigh Chalker (28:28):
I petty that poor dickhead mate that design the bird wings. I’m going to fly And what did the story say? Jumped up on the castle and had a crowd below him and stuff and launched off with these wooden duck feathered wings and just the whole

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (28:44):
Crowd did that

Dave Dye (28:45):
Into

Leigh Chalker (28:45):
The ground. Yeah, people I, a couple sheep I got no idea about.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (28:52):
I was trying to make,

Leigh Chalker (28:56):
He just hit the ground like a dart. So legend says, mate,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (29:00):
You said he had the whole crowd blow him. So I was like, did they form a line?

Alex Major (29:09):
Is this streaming on YouTube or PornHub? I’m

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (29:11):
Like, are we

Dave Dye (29:11):
Allowed both? Right,

Alex Major (29:14):
Because then the whole pan thing, then why am I wearing pants?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (29:18):
You guys opened with a story of someone’s mom and cans and stuff. So

Alex Major (29:23):
Yeah, she wasn’t doing any of that stuff. It was the whole story how it wasn’t exciting. That was the point of that story.

Leigh Chalker (29:42):
Tony Menzies watching be,

Dave Dye (29:48):
What’d you say?

Leigh Chalker (29:50):
Tony

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (29:50):
Menzies watching you just put a comment up. Oh,

Dave Dye (29:52):
Is he? There you go. So

Alex Major (29:54):
That’s what happened. Tony puts a YouTube comment, we get a little bit of a popup.

Leigh Chalker (29:58):
Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (29:59):
From Facebook as well. We’ve got one from Facebook watching from Melbourne.

Alex Major (30:03):
Oh, okay. Shout out. I wonder if my friend John from Shanghai, he said he’s going to tune in today and you better leave a comment so people know that I have friends there too because can’t just brag about all and

Leigh Chalker (30:19):
Not have backup.

Alex Major (30:19):
Good. There you go. Zach, say something so that way you can kind of slow down a little.

Leigh Chalker (30:32):
Talk about hands up for the next five minutes. Let’s swear.

Alex Major (30:38):
No, no, no. It’s a draw. Just talk That’ll slow you down so we can all catch up. So your turn to tell a story about sharks or bears or something or something intellectual, but I can’t drop examples

Dave Dye (30:53):
Too stupid. The colour yellow in Old Dime Spain.

Leigh Chalker (31:00):
Yeah, that’s a good topic. Dave. Who brought that up? I heard that’s why the Spanish Inquisition drawings were so dark come from

Dave Dye (31:22):
Much Source anyway,

Alex Major (31:29):
Figured out what was the biggest problem at the acquisition. They didn’t have enough colours to do drawings. That would piss me off too.

Leigh Chalker (31:38):
Give you the shits every day of the week, wouldn’t it? I tell you, I want some sunlight. Fuck, I’ve got to use grey again.

Alex Major (31:48):
Yeah, because I have no yellows.

Leigh Chalker (31:54):
Indeed.

Alex Major (31:55):
Yeah, the little happy sun next to the building. I just drew. I can’t be happy without the yellow. So

Leigh Chalker (32:02):
Yeah, that’s right up

Alex Major (32:05):
My paper and just go out and commit violence.

Leigh Chalker (32:07):
They wouldn’t sell bloody sunscreen if it was fucking grey, would they? Dear. So what’s everyone apart from Rob? Alex, what’s your favourite comic book? Dude,

Alex Major (32:25):
My favourite comic ball. I didn’t know what that question was

Leigh Chalker (32:27):
Going to be. Is it yellow?

Alex Major (32:31):
Yeah, it’s got yellow in it. It’s got yellow. I mean I always go back to Calvin and Hobbes all the time, but Oh, nice, for real. I used to read when I was getting into comics, I used to read a lot of image stuff when I first got into comics was a lot of Gen 13, deviate, witch, played all these kind of stuff in high school. Just stuff of girls in it and I never got into the Marvel DC stuff. There was too much background and I haven’t got enough attention for that kind of stuff, so I did that. Then I got into European comics for a while, so it was a lot of black, sad and even The’s it called, I haven’t studied French for a while, so I was like its I’m too good for English.

(33:26)
Then once I started travelling, I was working in the business, I was doing animation. I had had a TV show in China and I did toys in Hong Kong, so I was doing always drawing, but I was so out of the loop because everything’s blocked in China. There’s no proper comic stores. There was one in Beijing that would order stuff from Diamond but not in Shanghai and because I was just there, so out of the loop we used to do this, there was a little community there, artist community, expats mostly, but Chinese people trying to learn English were there and we did this comic series called Shaving in the Dark. It was like an anthology book. So I used to do that for a little bit and then I just deflected from the question

Dave Dye (34:13):
You have

Alex Major (34:15):
Write about way. I just don’t like comics anymore. Sorry guys,

Leigh Chalker (34:21):
Mate, to be honest with you, I haven’t bought a comic in ages, man. I’m the same. You get motivated by those things you loved as a kid and stuff I guess, and that’s why I draw. But yeah, no, me personally, I mean I keep up to date with Aussie comic books and shit, but I don’t buy mouth comic books. Fuck that. Not into that sort of stuff, but each to his own.

Dave Dye (34:53):
Yeah, that’s right.

Alex Major (34:54):
But I have to say that I’ve been out when I was here, it was just at the end of Platinum Grid stopped, greener pasture stopped. I don’t think they mean I’ve met all the guys before. Jason Polls and Tim McGillan and stuff. I’m still in touch with Tim, but then there was a little lull and that’s when I was doing comics. But then when I left just before I left at the time, super nervous started to blow up and I was seeing a lot of really solid local stuff happening, so that’s why I really left. I was like, ah, competition. I don’t like that. I’ve been back now for about a year, but because lockdown, I’ve just been locked up so I haven’t really gone out properly and I went to Kings Comics and I’ve noticed that they haven’t got a section for new indie locally produced comics, so I don’t know where you guys just basically sell ’em at conventions like us ComicCon and Supernova and stuff like that or is there plenty of stores that carry them and they’re just avoiding me. Yeah.

Dave Dye (36:06):
Who’d you go to? King’s Comics?

Alex Major (36:08):
Yeah, I went to King’s Coast. They used to buy my books so I used to always sell my books there before at Kings and they had a really cool little, they used to be on Elizabeth Street, had this cool little section by the counter.

Dave Dye (36:20):
Yeah,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (36:21):
Last time I went long gone

Alex Major (36:23):
And now they moved to a new place and it looks nicer but the Aussie section is just Cyclone comics and Kroo am like, it’s great. But these were still around when I was here and I was like, where’s all the new guys? The new stuff.

Dave Dye (36:39):
Well they won’t stock it. Some of them won’t stock it, but I had think my first two books, no hang on. The first book I did, they King stopped it for me. I think they sold two of ’em or something for me, but the next one they weren’t interested in and I haven’t approached ’em since, but I think they’ve got new, they may have a new owner or manager now. What was there when I first approached him and he might be, I dunno whether he’s better or worse, I don’t know.

Alex Major (37:17):
I just don’t have a little section anymore and I was like, because I even had these cool little photocopy comics as well and I was like, it’s pretty cool. I thought there was, they displayed them in a way so it didn’t feel that out of place with all the mainstream stuff. I mean I used to read a lot of slave labour comic stuff like milk and cheese and Johnny, the Homicidal Mania Act and that kind of stuff.

Dave Dye (37:46):
I approached a couple of the comic shops years ago and they just really weren’t too interested in stocking Australian stuff, so I just go to conventions and try and sell my stuff at conventions.

Alex Major (38:03):
How’s everyone

Edmund Kearsley (38:04):
Things going? I’ve just done my outlines.

Alex Major (38:09):
How you go? Doing better. Nice,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (38:11):
Nice.

Alex Major (38:12):
I’ve only done a fist in the face

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (38:16):
Better. Looks like a cool, I’m still a bit of a mess.

Alex Major (38:21):
Rob’s also on Procreator. There you go. Supporting Australian apps.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (38:26):
Oh, is it Australian? Is it?

Alex Major (38:27):
Yeah, Tasmania in Hobart.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (38:29):
I mean I knew that. That’s why I,

Alex Major (38:36):
Yeah, it is really weird that it’s such a mainstream map and it’s just some dudes in Hobart.

Dave Dye (38:43):
Yeah, good, isn’t it?

Alex Major (38:45):
Yeah.

Dave Dye (38:46):
Awesome

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (38:47):
Stuff.

Dave Dye (38:49):
You’re drawing. Are you Shane?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (38:52):
God no.

Dave Dye (38:54):
I thought you were going to draw mate. It

Edmund Kearsley (38:55):
Should be.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (38:57):
I should be, but the only way I can draw is if I get rid of my keyboard and if I get rid of my keyboard I can’t send messages to people so I’ve decided that was more important than me drawing some horrible, horrible picture.

Dave Dye (39:07):
I want to know the sweet stick figure. Want you a patented stick figures man. You’re doing so well.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (39:21):
Yeah, definitely. Ds Danny, definitely. Ds got to love the Ds. He stocks a lot of Australian.

Dave Dye (39:25):
Oh yeah, is good. Of course. Yeah, no, Brendan at Des. And then Mal Briggs at Impact. Impact. Impact.

Alex Major (39:36):
Impact. That’s in Canberra, right?

Dave Dye (39:38):
Yeah.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (39:41):
De in Canberra as well.

Dave Dye (39:43):
Yeah,

Edmund Kearsley (39:47):
And mini and Allstar comics in Melbourne are really good for if you want to get your comics into Melbourne.

Alex Major (39:55):
Yeah, awesome. I’ve been to Mour once in 2001 and I remember, I don’t know if it’s changed but I remember it was pretty awesome. There was an escalator going down and it had an upstairs, I dunno if you guys, is

Edmund Kearsley (40:07):
That on Bke Street or Swanson

Alex Major (40:10):
Street? I couldn’t tell you. This was 20 years ago, so this is when I had less grey hair.

Edmund Kearsley (40:16):
It used to have three levels.

Alex Major (40:18):
Oh yeah,

Edmund Kearsley (40:19):
Yeah. It’s where comics are. Ru is on Bke Street now is where was one of the floors of Mour back in the day.

Alex Major (40:28):
Oh wow.

Dave Dye (40:34):
Who was that put up? Des? Was that Danny Nolan? Yeah. Yeah. Good day Danny.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (40:40):
Yeah, Danny’s awesome. Good, awesome supporter of shops and creators and

Alex Major (40:49):
Pretty solid endorse Danny. Thanks.

Dave Dye (41:05):
We got Ledger awards coming up. Must be coming up soon.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (41:13):
Oh cool.

Dave Dye (41:14):
Anyone got anything in that posted around?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (41:16):
They’re doing it live this time. They

Dave Dye (41:19):
Did it last year Live stream thing and No, I mean

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (41:23):
As it in person they’re doing in person.

Dave Dye (41:26):
I see, right. Yeah.

Alex Major (41:28):
Where was it held in Sydney?

Dave Dye (41:33):
I think it was last. It’s been there for a couple of years now, so they’re probably going to do it in actually it. They had it at King’s last year on Live Stream. Pretty sure it was King’s in Sydney.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (41:50):
I’ve heard early rumblings that there’s a particular comic that’s doing a clean sweep of the Ledger awards

Dave Dye (41:58):
Toilet,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (41:59):
Trying like a toilet, something

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (42:02):
To do with the

Dave Dye (42:03):
Toilet.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (42:05):
Plenty of poop jokes. The headlines have already been written like the toilet makes a clean flush of the ledger awards.

Alex Major (42:15):
Oh nice. I thought we’ve got to stop with the sophisticated humour here. I thought we were taking the brow a little bit lower.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (42:24):
Yeah, you definitely haven’t met me before, Alex.

Dave Dye (42:27):
No,

Alex Major (42:28):
I haven’t met any of you guys.

Dave Dye (42:33):
We go back to the Spanish Inquisition in yellow.

Alex Major (42:37):
Think gets in Perth to see. Apparently

Dave Dye (42:40):
I’m remaining silent. I’m just, well, there you go. Danny just put up, it’s in Perth this year.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (42:50):
Yeah.

Dave Dye (42:51):
Oh, that’d be Bruce ARDS over there and I think he’s got a, he may have a fair bit to do with it perhaps.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (42:58):
Oh, okay.

Dave Dye (42:59):
He’d be one of the judges.

Alex Major (43:01):
Wouldn’t Gary Chana be also involved?

Dave Dye (43:04):
Well I think he finished up last year.

Alex Major (43:07):
Oh, okay. Was at some and I saw him in Sydney.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (43:13):
Think this one’s for you, ed?

Dave Dye (43:16):
Do what?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (43:18):
Bogan robot.

Dave Dye (43:19):
That’s Taylor.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (43:20):
Yeah.

Dave Dye (43:23):
Hey Taylor, keep it up. Good man.

Alex Major (43:28):
There you go.

Dave Dye (43:30):
Trying to join the live chat.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (43:31):
He was trying to join some for some reason. I dunno why?

Alex Major (43:38):
Well he is out drinking instead. Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (43:40):
He’s out drinking. That could be the confusion where the confusion started.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (43:45):
No, I think he means he’s out drinking us like he’s drinking more than us.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (43:49):
Oh, out drinking. Okay. Yes,

Dave Dye (43:50):
Everyone’s drinking too slowly. We

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (43:55):
Already finished one so I finished one.

Dave Dye (43:59):
Oh, alright.

Alex Major (44:00):
I finished one beer. I thought you finished a drawing. I was like,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (44:03):
No, no, no drawings. No drawings. Maybe next time maybe I’ll give the draught a go. I think the party guy is easier, but I’m going to give the draught a go.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (44:15):
Whatever euphemism you are comfortable with, don’t worry honey. I’m just giving the giraffe a go.

Alex Major (44:26):
Just imagine if you see the giraffe just all stressed out going like, ah, no, not again. Hoping nothing will come in.

Dave Dye (44:38):
What cup can

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (44:39):
I put in there? Just put it in the can. Yeah, that’s okay.

Alex Major (44:46):
Everything

Alex Major (44:46):
All right? Shane, you’ve got some kind of

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (44:49):
Oh yeah, sorry. Yeah. Yes. Sorry. Sorry. I’m communicating with my drink supplier.

Alex Major (44:57):
I’m looking at living the fancy life.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (44:59):
The fancy life. Living the fancy life.

Dave Dye (45:02):
Yeah.

Alex Major (45:03):
I have to get my own drinks. Do

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (45:05):
You live with Dan Murphy? That’s pretty awesome.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (45:13):
Just there. Hi, that’s Carrie. Hi Carrie.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (45:21):
I’m the one that Shane’s always talking about and that she loves me.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (45:30):
Rob’s just saying he’s the one I’m always talking about

Dave Dye (45:34):
But it’s not talking. It’s usually whinging aren’t isn’t it Shane?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (45:38):
Well I like to use talking because it’s a more polite word. Yeah,

Dave Dye (45:43):
Good self-esteem bud.

Alex Major (45:53):
I’m being quiet for the last three seconds. I’m just trying to catch up with Zach. There you go. Oh,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (46:01):
Flying through. Is that Inkin? Yeah, I’m inking now. Oh nice. So what we’ll do when we hit the hour, we’ll go pens down. No, we don’t have to be that strict.

Alex Major (46:26):
I’m probably going to have to go upstream and then drink less and I might finish it off bit because I can’t add colour. I don’t have enough time to add colour and stuff.

Dave Dye (46:36):
How long have we been going now?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (46:39):
47 minutes.

Dave Dye (46:41):
We only got 15 minutes. No

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (46:43):
Way. I don’t have any minutes worth knowing.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (46:48):
You’ve got 13 minutes. Nice. Lucky number.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (46:52):
Oh man, mine is a mess. Look, it’s just a wide screen.

Dave Dye (46:59):
Oh you started doing it. You’ve restarted mate.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (47:04):
I’m sort of cheating. I’m like, well if I’m going to draw in I may as well start on my cover for issue two, but I was fairly ambitious to think I could do a cover in an hour and talk shit at the same time.

Dave Dye (47:20):
I dunno

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (47:22):
What’s up with these? Look how long his arm is compared to his head. This is like a back to the drawing board type situation. My drawing board.

Dave Dye (47:43):
Everyone’s feeling the pressure now. Yeah, no talk minutes and ticking.

Alex Major (47:51):
Yeah, I’m not wasting time with my commentary. Sorry guys. Somebody should talk though.

Dave Dye (48:06):
Probably should be easy. It’s not a drawing.

Alex Major (48:09):
I think it’s a pretty boring stream if we all just heads down.

Leigh Chalker (48:13):
Well let’s talk about the colour red.

Alex Major (48:18):
It’s a recent invention. I dunno if I enough

Dave Dye (48:20):
About it. Well

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (48:21):
Dave was there when they came up with it.

Leigh Chalker (48:27):
What was the actual thing that you came up with red that day?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (48:33):
The prime minister come to your house and

Dave Dye (48:36):
They

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (48:36):
Cutting a ribbon and they’re like the ribbon was green and you’re like, you know what? This ribbon would look good if it was red.

Dave Dye (48:43):
Yeah, a bit of a complimentary colour in there. So yeah,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (48:48):
They rolled out the blue carpet.

Dave Dye (48:51):
Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (48:52):
Roll out the blue carpet. Just doesn’t have the ring as the red carpet. If you went to an award ceremony and they said fucking you go mate, here’s the blue carpet. You’d been looking around going,

Dave Dye (49:07):
It’s a,

Alex Major (49:10):
I wouldn’t discriminate against blue like that.

Leigh Chalker (49:13):
Oh no. Then would I still walk on the carpet but they had a moment of like, oh, I thought it’d be red.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (49:21):
As a guy who’s never won anything, I’d just be pretty stoked to be at the award show. I wouldn’t be the carpet

Leigh Chalker (49:26):
Mate. I’d be happy on welcome one of those welcome matching you your feet on

Alex Major (49:34):
Lee. You sound like somebody who would refuse an Eisner award on the blue carpet. Be like, I’m not going to San Diego if the carpet’s blue.

Dave Dye (49:42):
That’s right

Leigh Chalker (49:44):
Mate. Has anyone

Isaac George (49:45):
Ever actually refused their Eisner award?

Dave Dye (49:50):
I dunno.

Alex Major (49:51):
Well I haven’t been offered of one yet.

Dave Dye (49:53):
Only things only get refused like that. If it’s some political thing. I’m not doing it because, I dunno. Alan Moore, it’s Moore.

Alex Major (50:11):
Oh yeah, he probably, he’s the type that would refuse it. Yeah,

Dave Dye (50:14):
Mail it to me or something. I’ll cast a spell and it’ll come to me.

Isaac George (50:20):
Alan Moore just signed an ongoing publishing agreement with Image I think.

Leigh Chalker (50:24):
Yeah, I see that for five novels or something.

Dave Dye (50:27):
Yeah, I saw that.

Leigh Chalker (50:29):
Yeah. Yeah,

Isaac George (50:31):
My, yep. Okay.

Dave Dye (50:37):
Do you blokes watch the cartoon Kfa or Comic Kfa? Whatever it’s cartoon is. Kfab. Yeah. That’s pretty good show.

Peter Wilson (50:46):
I love it. Yeah, really interesting.

Dave Dye (50:49):
Have some good stuff.

Alex Major (50:52):
I think we should go back to the Spanish Inquisition because

Dave Dye (50:56):
Getting

Alex Major (50:56):
The audience hyped up.

Dave Dye (51:00):
Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (51:01):
I got a strange request here from Tony.

Dave Dye (51:04):
Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (51:07):
I think that would kill the ratings.

Dave Dye (51:09):
Yeah,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (51:12):
I’ll grab a guitar Shane and you just start going.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (51:15):
You think my drone’s bad? Wait till I sing. God.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (51:20):
Yeah, I dunno if you guys know because I was in a band. I thought

Alex Major (51:23):
You were drawing

Dave Dye (51:24):
That.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (51:27):
Wow. You’ve just flown through that drawing there Zach. That’s just,

Alex Major (51:34):
I was impressed before but now

Dave Dye (51:38):
Here’s my one that I drew just then.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (51:43):
Awesome, awesome.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (51:46):
I just wrote this while you guys were drawing

Dave Dye (51:53):
So

Leigh Chalker (51:54):
You could have finished that cover in an hour. Rob. Fantastic.

Peter Wilson (52:02):
It’s impressive that we’re doing comics. Stick to the task at hand please.

Dave Dye (52:07):
Typical comic book artist is always writing novels when they shoot

Leigh Chalker (52:12):
Any spare time.

Peter Wilson (52:14):
An easier art form, isn’t it? Comics are the highest, they’re the hardest. Anyone can bash out words.

Dave Dye (52:20):
Yeah, that’s right. Words are dumb

Peter Wilson (52:22):
Words and pictures. Come on. That’s what the challenge is.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (52:25):
That’s what it’s all about.

Dave Dye (52:26):
It’s twice as hard.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (52:28):
Well, Lee just dropped out. Let’s see if he can get back.

Dave Dye (52:32):
He’s probably going to get another Ry or Scott

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (52:49):
Looks like he’s back and I’m just being a horrible host.

Leigh Chalker (52:52):
It doesn’t matter man. You’re awesome. It North Queensland internet.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (52:59):
Ah yes.

Leigh Chalker (53:01):
Probably the satellite that I’ve got in my skull.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (53:09):
Yes,

Dave Dye (53:13):
You in Townsville. Are you Lee?

Leigh Chalker (53:16):
I am Dave, yeah, mate. Yeah. You ever been up this way

Dave Dye (53:21):
On exercise or on my way to exercise when I was in the Army.

Leigh Chalker (53:25):
Yeah. Yeah. What’d you think of the place?

Dave Dye (53:29):
Nice. Quite humid when I was there. Quite warm and sultry

Leigh Chalker (53:35):
Certainly is. Mate,

Dave Dye (53:37):
I didn’t get much time to get into town. I think I went into town once the whole time. The rest, I was at the rack barracks and

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (53:52):
Rocky’s the most north. I’ve been

Dave Dye (53:55):
Bundy.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (53:56):
Rocky.

Dave Dye (53:57):
Oh, Rocky, right.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (53:59):
Where’s Rocky? I’ve never heard of that. Rock Hampton. Wow.

Leigh Chalker (54:05):
Central Queensland then.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (54:07):
Yeah,

Alex Major (54:09):
All the way up. All the way up north from Port Douglas down to Hobart. This is what happens when you’re a foreigner. You see more of Australia than the locals.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (54:20):
It’s probably true, but no, the most south I’ve been is Sydney. And that’s not just living. I’m talking, visiting.

Alex Major (54:27):
Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (54:28):
That’s it for the whole world. Sydney to Rockhampton. Is that the only two places you’ve been? No, no. Between those places.

Alex Major (54:40):
Tasmania is actually really, we went there with some friends and we just rented a car and just randomly just road tripped it for like six days and then we just camped out in the bush. Got attacked by Wombats.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (54:52):
Wombats. That’s the real story. Go back to that.

Leigh Chalker (54:58):
Yeah, no I reckon. Well

Alex Major (54:59):
The colour red was already at the time, so it was less

Leigh Chalker (55:02):
Exciting. Please explain the wombat attack. Me cool here.

Alex Major (55:07):
Yeah, we were some friends. It was funny. It was me and another Hungarian dude and I checked it and a Malaysian businessman who thought we were kidding when he said we’re going to camping.

Leigh Chalker (55:20):
That’s a joke mate.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (55:25):
Wonderful.

Alex Major (55:26):
Struggled to have real friends, so just whatever random person. But yeah, no, he was a coworker of a friend and he said, we’re going camping to Tasmania and he thought he was kidding, but we were outright camping. We didn’t book anything. We just bought some tents and then he was just dressed nicely thinking we’re going to be in some kind of resorts and then we’re just driving around randomly and he was grumpy for about one or two days, but then he really got into it. It’s like where there’s four straight dudes in a car, we’re just going to fight a lot and tell a bunch of stories. And he was upset and then he got in and then he also started joined in on the fighting contest and then he goes listening. That’s what dudes do when that’s the boys time. And we ended up finding

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (56:14):
Listening.

Alex Major (56:16):
I’m sure there are. I’m sure there are. Anyways, so we rented this car.

Dave Dye (56:23):
I’m sure there out there clicked the wrong channel there Rob. I’m sure there’s,

Alex Major (56:29):
There’s eight dudes on camera. One of us is bound to pull in the girls. Anyway, so we were in the car, we drove, found this place it a two hours hike for camping. Oh, that’s great. So we hiked for three hours, couldn’t find a campsite, but we found someplace that we could probably camp, but I think it’s illegal to do that, but eastern Europeans don’t care about the law, so we just did. We just set up our tents, some random bush area and we went down chasing the kangaroos. We thought they were fun so we had to just look at them with a tonne of little wallabies. I think they were those, yeah, they’re wallabies. Small kangaroos, wallabies. And then we went back and we saw Wombat and we scared the wombat and then he just ran off and then crashed into dude’s tent and dragged the tent for a little couple of metres.

Dave Dye (57:20):
They’re a pretty solid animal wombat.

Alex Major (57:26):
Yeah, they also, I did not know they run that fast, but then the ranger told us, we talked to later, we didn’t tell ’em what happened but he just random talks about wombats and then yeah, he told us that they run really fast. I think he said like 30 kilometres an hour or something. I don’t know.

Dave Dye (57:42):
I always thought they moved so slow

Alex Major (57:45):
I think. Yeah, but he said they can’t move left or right that

Dave Dye (57:47):
Off. You know them off.

Alex Major (57:55):
Anyway, point of the story is we never got to know his name. He just ran away too fast.

Dave Dye (58:02):
Looking good Zach.

Alex Major (58:07):
So I hope the tourism board of Tasmania appreciates this free plug.

Leigh Chalker (58:16):
Oh, make the three plugs that have been thrown out today. It’s like cans and the colour yellow. The colour yellow. That’s the biggest plug off. I’m going to, I’m going to throw whatever got on yellow mate.

Alex Major (58:42):
Progress stuff. So there you go. Here’s more karate stuff. Oh, where is it?

Dave Dye (58:48):
There

Alex Major (58:49):
We go. There you go. Oh yeah,

Dave Dye (58:53):
You got a backpack on. Has he?

Alex Major (58:55):
Sorry, backpack No’s just No, he’s just got a hump.

Dave Dye (59:01):
Alright. Okay. Nice. Did you start that tonight? Yeah. Dead just then. Holy shit. I thought I was fast, but there you’re not. Clearly not.

Leigh Chalker (59:19):
That was cold, man. What was that? It’s funny, the voice from the distance. Oh cool.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (59:35):
That’s

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (59:35):
Rad. Nice one Dave.

Leigh Chalker (59:37):
That’s cool. What I’ll do is

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (59:38):
At the end I’ll bring everyone’s

Leigh Chalker (59:40):
Screen up to full

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (59:41):
So you can see everyone’s a bit better. I’ll do you one at a time.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (59:45):
Oh, here we go.

Dave Dye (59:47):
No, better off being small. You can’t see all the problem with it.

Alex Major (59:54):
Yeah, not everybody’s proud of their work, Shane.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (59:58):
They should be.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:00:01):
I’m not super comfortable at a time.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:00:06):
Fine, we’ll do the full orgy then. Rob,

Alex Major (01:00:10):
There you go. Now that I can get behind

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:00:14):
Or

Leigh Chalker (01:00:14):
Someone’s, you’ll probably have to mate if it’s one of those things. You’re sick.

Alex Major (01:00:28):
I’m sorry.

Leigh Chalker (01:00:36):
Well it’s been a learning curve, hasn’t it? We came here for an hour to draw pictures and the amount of topics have been awesome.

Dave Dye (01:00:44):
Yeah, very education.

Leigh Chalker (01:00:47):
I’ve enjoyed this evening. Gentlemen,

Alex Major (01:00:50):
Anything else besides the colours? Likewise Spanish Inquisition. Anything else in the documentary?

Leigh Chalker (01:00:58):
The wombat speed.

Alex Major (01:01:00):
Oh, the wombat. Yeah, that was the documentary. That was just real life. That was more like a real life jackass moment.

Leigh Chalker (01:01:08):
Oh mate.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:01:09):
For almost like an hour guys, so

Leigh Chalker (01:01:13):
We should be up for a tourism award and everything. Fucking up. Yeah,

Dave Dye (01:01:26):
I went to the Adelaide comic and Toy Fair. Was it last weekend or weekend before? It’s gone. I can’t remember weeks. Just go too quick. But it was a one day event.

Leigh Chalker (01:01:41):
Was it good?

Dave Dye (01:01:42):
Yeah. Yeah. People went there to buy comics and toys and comics. It was mostly, there wasn’t many independent comic creators there. Not as many as usual. I had a pretty good show and sold a lot of stuff, thank goodness. Awesome. So you get a chance to get along to ’em. I reckon maybe people are wanting to buy some independent comics and that, so if you get a chance to get to the small shows, it’s a good thing to get to and try and flog your stuff off that.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:02:29):
Yeah. Nice. Yeah, I’ve got to get off my butt and start documenting where all these small events are. Well, finding them first and then documenting them.

Peter Wilson (01:02:39):
Actually the smaller

Alex Major (01:02:39):
Things are a lot better. I went to ComicCon a couple of times and I just thought it was a really tough time there. The only people that can enjoy themselves who are just pure fans or you’re famous already, but if you’re someplace in the middle or below,

Peter Wilson (01:03:01):
It’s like going to a big stinging store now. Supernova. It’s like going to a big ding store. It’s all kind. Just pop vinyls and Kings Comics and that’s about it.

Alex Major (01:03:11):
I know. You know what it was still, I went there three years ago. I was there Supernova in Sydney and it was still pretty okay. I thought it was, we still had a pretty good stall and there was still, traffic was okay. It’s really where traffic goes because there was still a pretty big space for creators. So if you are looking for indie stuff, but I remember Comic San Diego, it still had, there’s a lot of space for indie people, but just not where the traffic goes. The only reason there’s traffic there is because everything else is packed

Dave Dye (01:03:44):
And a lot of people, those supernova that they don’t turn up to buy comics, they turn up to do cosplay and go get a signature from or whatever movie stars there or something.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:03:59):
I’ll go there for.

Dave Dye (01:04:02):
Yeah, good on you mate.

Peter Wilson (01:04:04):
Absolutely.

Alex Major (01:04:06):
Yeah. I go there for cosplay. Myselfs had I just dress up as a Pacman for the kids. Nice.

Leigh Chalker (01:04:21):
I’ve never actually been to a Comicon or anything like that from Townsville. We’re fully isolated man. So we have this thing called a magnetic on that comes and goes. It’s on every year for two years and then it miss a year or two. I’ve never actually walked in the door and experienced the whole cos Sorry, that’s my little fella down here. Yeah, but I’ve never experienced that whole cosplay walk in the door and okay. Wow. Right. I know if I’d like it or not.

Alex Major (01:05:05):
I reckon what you’d like. It’s m in France. I went there once and there is, I’ve been to a bunch of comic conventions around the place and that’s been the most pure, if you like comics. That’s comics. They have all these Ang, if the street name signs are all in word bubbles like comics Isn’t the

Dave Dye (01:05:27):
Whole town the convent?

Alex Major (01:05:28):
Yeah, the towns. Yeah, the whole town’s a convention. It’s not a little, they have a couple of venues but they also, you go to church there and the church is selling comics as well or exhibiting comic pages.

Dave Dye (01:05:44):
Amazing.

Alex Major (01:05:46):
So the last time I went to church, but it was a good, you have to one, if you have to do one expensive trip for a comic convention, that’s the one I’d recommend because San Diego, it’s just a bunch of, it’s an ad. It’s a big advertisement there. It’s okay.

Dave Dye (01:06:08):
So which one did you name then? Alex

Alex Major (01:06:11):
Emm is the one to go. An who? An

Dave Dye (01:06:16):
Ango?

Alex Major (01:06:17):
Yeah, Ango. A-N-G-O-U-L-E-M-E.

Dave Dye (01:06:24):
An and what country? That’s in

Alex Major (01:06:26):
France.

Dave Dye (01:06:27):
France, right.

Alex Major (01:06:30):
It’s not a big town. When the comic convention comes in, the population doubles.

Leigh Chalker (01:06:35):
Can I ask a question, Alex? You’ve spent time in France and stuff like that? Yes. Is that correct from what you’ve

Alex Major (01:06:44):
Been saying? No, I just literally went there for the convention. So I went there once for five weeks looking for work and I didn’t find work and I came back working at Disney. Disney used to have a studio in Sydney, so I used to work there. I took a five week holiday and I thought I’ll go to France, find a job in three weeks and give him my two weeks notice from France. Just called him up so I quit, but I just came back, nothing happened. My French is not good enough to live that, so I’m dual citizen, so I have an EU passport so I can rock up anywhere in Europe and then go like, oh yeah, I’ll collect your welfare.

Leigh Chalker (01:07:23):
I was interested just to wonder how that Netflix show or whatever the TV show was becomes on Australian Netflix of Snow Piercer. I actually read the comic books, the French comic books, oh, I don’t know, like five, six years back and actually really quite liked them and was just wondering if that was a big thing over in France. They certainly advertise it as being like one of France’s number one, two comic books. Well, it

Alex Major (01:07:59):
Doesn’t, I visited

Leigh Chalker (01:08:01):
Checking out the comic book, perhaps not the TV show, but the comic book is awesome.

Alex Major (01:08:07):
I’ll have to check it out. I’ve been missing album last I was in France was a long time ago. It was like in 2004. And then I worked for French companies in Shanghai, so I hung out with them and got, but yeah, I’ve missed out on a lot of that. When I was abroad, I spent a year in Europe living in Poland and I was a couple of months in the UK and I was in Scotland on a film very briefly. And then I was mostly Shanghai for eight years and then Hong Kong and Korea and stuff like that. So Korean comic conventions were full on. I haven’t seen cosplay anywhere more professional in my life than I did in Korea, but this is not the cosplay crowd. So next topic.

Dave Dye (01:08:58):
Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:08:59):
Well the next topic is it’s been an hour, guys.

Dave Dye (01:09:03):
Oh right.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:09:09):
Anyone want to volunteer request? I’ll go first. Oh, we got Ed. We got Ed. I’ll just push you up to the top screen,

Leigh Chalker (01:09:19):
Make

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:09:20):
You, oh nice. There

Alex Major (01:09:25):
You go. A lot of blood. There you go. This is what happens when Red’s invented.

Leigh Chalker (01:09:32):
Dashy Yellow would’ve served as well.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:09:39):
Awesome, ed. Awesome. Thank you.

Dave Dye (01:09:43):
This is Ed’s baby though, isn’t it? Who’s Yeah.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:09:49):
Any volunteers or should I just go through the list? Hang on, I just got one here, got one here and I’ve got to figure out how to press the buttons correctly. Oh

Alex Major (01:09:58):
Nice. Looks really good.

Leigh Chalker (01:09:59):
Oh, that’s a good one.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:10:01):
Great hair. These face looks really good too. Yeah, nice Zach. Very well done. That’s

Leigh Chalker (01:10:10):
Cool. Drawings, both Drawings look wicked. Well done. Jens,

Dave Dye (01:10:19):
Just let me wash me brush out of you.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:10:22):
Yep. Any other volunteers?

Leigh Chalker (01:10:28):
Come on. Sorry Ed, I forgot his shoes mate.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:10:33):
Okay, yep. I’ll just boost you up. Oh, cool. Hang on. Maybe if I,

Dave Dye (01:10:44):
So they got one finger

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:10:45):
Death punch flicking a bunch of brick away. Oh, nice. Ka. Yes,

Leigh Chalker (01:10:51):
Peter Wilson. That’s cool too. And you were delayed there, man. You had no and stuff. That’s wicked. Well done. Cheers,

Dave Dye (01:10:58):
Man. Appreciate that. Thank you.

Leigh Chalker (01:11:03):
I forgot his shoes, Zach. Sorry mate.

Alex Major (01:11:07):
Overrated. Anyways.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:11:10):
Barefoot. I like

Dave Dye (01:11:11):
It. Barefoot one. Oh, you got five toes there or four? Yeah. Well

Leigh Chalker (01:11:17):
I sort of figured there’s this thing up in Townsville, man, where dudes wear a football sock up and a football sock down. So I just sort of throw a bit of culturalism

Dave Dye (01:11:26):
In there and

Leigh Chalker (01:11:27):
Grant one sleeve down and one sleeve.

Dave Dye (01:11:32):
Does

Edmund Kearsley (01:11:32):
That mean they’ve got a gun when they do that?

Leigh Chalker (01:11:34):
Well, I dunno, Zach, it’s a comic book mate. They could do whatever they want, if they want to pull. I was

Edmund Kearsley (01:11:39):
Talking about the guys with the footy socks. One up, one down means they’ve got a gun.

Dave Dye (01:11:47):
Does

Edmund Kearsley (01:11:47):
It? It’s a joke. No, it It’s a really, really funny joke. Yeah, don’t worry about it.

Leigh Chalker (01:11:55):
In my solitude. I guess I missed that one. Sorry. Champion. That’s okay.

Edmund Kearsley (01:12:08):
That looks rad.

Dave Dye (01:12:12):
Dave, if you’re ready? Yep. Oh nice. Loving the hair.

Leigh Chalker (01:12:23):
Awesome, Dave.

Dave Dye (01:12:25):
Yeah, I was about to say that line through the air.

Alex Major (01:12:29):
Yeah, the cool detail. I like the little rips on the belly there. Probably my abs inspired the last time when I had to switch.

Dave Dye (01:12:38):
I’ll take better from that.

Leigh Chalker (01:12:43):
That’s fucking awesome.

Dave Dye (01:12:46):
Thanks mate. Cool. Thank you very much fellas.

Alex Major (01:12:51):
Yep. Okay, cool. Just a second. I’ll just, you havent finished it. Oh, there you go. Oh,

Dave Dye (01:12:58):
That doesn’t come worried that. Come on.

Edmund Kearsley (01:13:08):
What’s the alien pointing

Alex Major (01:13:12):
Or is it got a probe in

Edmund Kearsley (01:13:16):
Going for the finger probe?

Dave Dye (01:13:17):
It seems

Leigh Chalker (01:13:18):
To be an alien, Alex.

Dave Dye (01:13:23):
I didn’t where that ended up. That why he’s in pain. I understand now. Yeah, close up.

Alex Major (01:13:36):
Okay, somebody else?

Dave Dye (01:13:39):
Anyone left? Alex?

Alex Major (01:13:41):
Okay, cool. It’s not finished, but anyways, that’s

Dave Dye (01:13:44):
Okay. Whatever you could do in an hour.

Alex Major (01:13:46):
Okay, cool. So here he is. Where is it?

Dave Dye (01:13:50):
Oh, awesome.

Alex Major (01:13:53):
There you go. That’s awesome.

Dave Dye (01:13:54):
Alex,

Alex Major (01:13:55):
I just had to add a bit of Euro trash to the top. So it’s,

Dave Dye (01:14:00):
He’s

Alex Major (01:14:01):
Playing what we call football or what you guys call, I don’t know, whatever.

Dave Dye (01:14:05):
Soccer. Soccer.

Leigh Chalker (01:14:12):
That’s awesome.

Alex Major (01:14:14):
I don’t even know how to aim it properly at the camera. So

Dave Dye (01:14:17):
There you go. Yellow but yellow.

Leigh Chalker (01:14:22):
I’m just adding, I didn’t want to say anything.

Dave Dye (01:14:29):
It

Edmund Kearsley (01:14:29):
Reminds me of a post Spanish Inquisition painting because

Leigh Chalker (01:14:33):
It’s

Alex Major (01:14:37):
Basically after this I’m travelling back in time and I’m going to make all those fuckers jealous. Look at this

Dave Dye (01:14:42):
Red and yellow, look at all this yellow, I lock you up.

Alex Major (01:14:48):
See this iPad, you can’t have it. And now I’ll just go back in my DeLorean and get back to

Dave Dye (01:14:56):
Thousand 15.

Leigh Chalker (01:15:00):
That’s awesome. Well done guys. Thank you very much.

Alex Major (01:15:06):
Cool. No worries. Very nice to meet you guys. Very glad to chat with you guys and Awesome.

Dave Dye (01:15:12):
Yeah, back

Alex Major (01:15:15):
In person at a convention or at a pub or the police. It’s all good. Yeah.

Dave Dye (01:15:20):
Yeah. Looking forward to that. Hopeful we get a chance.

Alex Major (01:15:27):
Cool.

Leigh Chalker (01:15:28):
Thank you guys. That was cool. Thank you. I was going to say the F word, but look to hell with it. It was as cool as fuck. Thanks very much. That was excellent. Love to meet you. It’s okay. This channel is ticked. This is not for children, so we’re sweet.

Alex Major (01:15:45):
Half my audience

Leigh Chalker (01:15:46):
Sleep better tonight.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:15:53):
Did you want me to play the outro music? I was in a band, so

Leigh Chalker (01:15:56):
Yeah. Rob, come on. Yeah, come on Rob. You’d have a guitar in. You have to. Why? I was actually just

Dave Dye (01:16:06):
Joking. But yeah,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:16:08):
I think Ed was going to play the bongos on some of those globes

Dave Dye (01:16:10):
Behind him.

Alex Major (01:16:14):
Rob, if you need a triangle player for your band, just say

Dave Dye (01:16:19):
What? Is that Ed behind you? Is that the universe? You got all the planets there. Have you mate?

Edmund Kearsley (01:16:23):
These are my wife’s. She collected a bunch of globes.

Dave Dye (01:16:30):
Oh, they’re all the atlas. They’re all the world. They’re different planets. Oh, okay. I thought you might add the universe or something. The whole planetary system.

Edmund Kearsley (01:16:42):
It’s a collection of,

Leigh Chalker (01:16:44):
It’s the multiverse.

Edmund Kearsley (01:16:44):
Different types of glues. Yeah,

Dave Dye (01:16:47):
It’s the multiverse. Yeah.

Leigh Chalker (01:16:50):
It’ll be starring in the next Dr. Strange movie. A variety store. And there’s a globe. I’ll grab that for her. Or is it a personal choice of hers to choose whatever globe she likes

Edmund Kearsley (01:17:10):
From antique stores and markets and stuff.

Dave Dye (01:17:12):
Oh nice.

Leigh Chalker (01:17:14):
So you actually like

Dave Dye (01:17:16):
The

Edmund Kearsley (01:17:16):
Top of the thing.

Dave Dye (01:17:19):
Yeah.

Leigh Chalker (01:17:19):
Yeah. That’s cool man. Everyone’s got their own thing. Hey, that’s cool.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:17:23):
How often do you have to explain?

Leigh Chalker (01:17:24):
Because haven’t said much tonight, so you haven’t said much tonight. Mate, so I just wanted to bombard you with questions,

Edmund Kearsley (01:17:34):
But normally,

Dave Dye (01:17:44):
Well,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:17:45):
I don’t know how to end one of these.

Leigh Chalker (01:17:47):
What’s

Edmund Kearsley (01:17:47):
The next thing? Next?

Dave Dye (01:17:49):
Just play Next

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:17:50):
Week. Next week? Yeah. Good point. Next week. I haven’t got a thing made up for it yet of course, because I don’t know who’s going to be there yet, but next week the theme is Vivian Jones occult detective

Edmund Kearsley (01:18:02):
The giraffe.

Dave Dye (01:18:03):
Right on and off. Yes. He smokes a pipe. He’s going to love it. He smokes a pipe as well, right? Okay. He to

Edmund Kearsley (01:18:12):
Spend all week practising drawing pipes

Dave Dye (01:18:16):
Challenge, the main goal was to piss off Happy Harold. That was it, right? What the giraffe

Edmund Kearsley (01:18:30):
Or Deb? Rob should start now.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:18:36):
I mean I technically have, the giraffe was going to be in the background of this picture, so

Dave Dye (01:18:42):
You have to come. There we go.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:18:44):
We’ve got a nice comment there. Someone’s watching. Thanks.

Dave Dye (01:18:47):
Thanks Taylor. Right on mate.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:18:54):
Vivian’s was going to be in the background.

Dave Dye (01:18:57):
Does that count? If

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:18:59):
I haven’t really started,

Dave Dye (01:19:01):
I can see,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:19:03):
Polish it up a bit and we’ve got ourselves a cover.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:19:06):
Not on camera. I wouldn’t polish it on camera.

Dave Dye (01:19:08):
That’s

Edmund Kearsley (01:19:08):
Disgusting. That’s already been marked. Not for kids. So you can go

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:19:14):
And I did watch back the bit where we were on livestream the other night and we made a euphemism sort of thing and then you just said peanut. I find that delightful.

Dave Dye (01:19:29):
There’s, that’s me page, front page of me noir story. Oh cool. Oh wow. It’s really good. Dave, you’re killing it.

Edmund Kearsley (01:19:42):
Make it full screen, Shane.

Dave Dye (01:19:43):
Oh yeah, yeah.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:19:45):
I haven’t got quick enough reflexes there.

Dave Dye (01:19:47):
You’re alright bud. It’s beautiful.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:19:50):
That’s awesome. Dave,

Dave Dye (01:19:53):
That looks really good.

Leigh Chalker (01:19:55):
Question to you, man. You were talking to Shane the other day about Ben Sullivan doing old school stuff. I like your stuff man. What’s your you paint brush and greys. You like pencils. What particular pens do you like to ink or what do you do then?

Dave Dye (01:20:16):
I usually use often. Can you see that?

Leigh Chalker (01:20:23):
Yep. Oh yeah.

Dave Dye (01:20:24):
Bottom my lines done with that.

Leigh Chalker (01:20:26):
So you’re an Indian ink dude? Yep. Yeah,

Dave Dye (01:20:29):
Bottle Indian ink and a brush.

Leigh Chalker (01:20:35):
Yeah. Alright, ink. What do you prefer? Ink with

Dave Dye (01:20:41):
This one’s? I don’t, I’ve only just recently started to put grey washes in. I just used me when I am inking, I wash me brush or me nib every now and then just to stop it clogging up because Indian very thick

Leigh Chalker (01:21:04):
And

Dave Dye (01:21:04):
You’ve got to wash your nib every now and then. Wash the tip

Leigh Chalker (01:21:09):
Clean. I tell my son the same thing.

Dave Dye (01:21:11):
Yeah. And then start again. And every now when you wash your brush every now and then, of course and your water, you got the water here gets pretty black and that’s what I use to do my greys.

Leigh Chalker (01:21:26):
Oh cool.

Dave Dye (01:21:28):
So the grey wash is just the dirty water. I’ve got

Leigh Chalker (01:21:30):
A comics fan. Very cool. Dave. That’s awesome.

Dave Dye (01:21:38):
I’ve got to go back. I’m going to put some more blacks. I’ve got to more dark, more noir, but they’re most of me tools I use. I’ve also do my own lettering of course. I’ve got one of these aims guides.

Leigh Chalker (01:21:54):
Oh nice. Yeah, right.

Dave Dye (01:21:57):
Aim guides and initially I, oh, where are we here? I’ve got a blue lead in there, blue graphite and because I’ll have trouble with my hands, I’ll getting old and I’ve got trouble with my hands and I tend to grab the pencil for too long doing these sort of strokes and they cramp up after a couple of hours or whatever. I hauled out a champagne cork

Leigh Chalker (01:22:28):
And a stick fair then can wait

Dave Dye (01:22:31):
And that just gives a different angle for me to, took me a little while to get used to it, like half an hour, but now I’m pretty natural to hold that now and I don’t get that pain in my hands.

Leigh Chalker (01:22:43):
That’s really clever.

Dave Dye (01:22:46):
Yeah, so that’s helped me. If anyone has that sort of problem, just try that. Just drill it out with you. Drill.

Leigh Chalker (01:22:53):
Nice. That is awesome. Dave.

Dave Dye (01:22:56):
And this nib here, that’s a post office nib. That was my old dad’s. He had a box of these in his, that was the first nib I ever drew with that type of nib. That’s the one I used for me lettering in that. That is some solid lettering.

Leigh Chalker (01:23:21):
Yeah. Hell yeah.

Dave Dye (01:23:23):
That’s the master. Everyone does it. What the fact you can leather That clean terrifies me. The aims guide. It does the

Alex Major (01:23:36):
More cleaner than the font is.

Dave Dye (01:23:38):
Yeah.

Leigh Chalker (01:23:41):
Dave, that’s out outstanding. Thank you for that. That’s awesome. It looks great. I love learning how other people do their thing, man. That’s great. Yeah,

Dave Dye (01:23:49):
I’m the same. Yeah, I love to hear what people do and how they do it and all that. We’ve all got our different ways and I vary a lot different times and stuff. Always experimenting. But yeah, I’m interested to hear how you blokes go about doing your work as well. What do you

Alex Major (01:24:11):
I use this iPad that’s got a push comics and button comics I made and I take credit and make all the fat cash.

Dave Dye (01:24:23):
You guys are getting fat cash.

Alex Major (01:24:28):
It’s a new blockchain cryptocurrency thing. I use it to my nft.

Dave Dye (01:24:40):
Whatcha you using when you ink?

Leigh Chalker (01:24:44):
I use, basically I’ve changed over the years. I’ve been doing it so long, but at the moment I’ve picked up these Faber Castle Manga black and white pens that come in varying. You get your extra smalls and your point ones and your point fives and all that. So I tend to find that we are thinking, I like that I use a lot of paintbrush. I don’t tend to use the paintbrush on the actual characters. I use it more in the background. I love grey wash. The grey wash, as you said Dave comes from the water that you dip your pen into as well. But this is going to sound probably horrible, but every now and then because I like to smoke cigarettes, I can’t find the ashtray so I occasionally drop a cigarette into the water and I can get to change that water for a couple of days mate. So it just develops with colour and I think there’s quite a bit of tobacco in the original drawings as well.

Dave Dye (01:26:04):
It ain’t a secret. I was looking at one of your pictures on Facebook the other day that you put up and I thought look at those brown stains in that. That’s buddy.

Alex Major (01:26:21):
You’ve been caught out

Leigh Chalker (01:26:22):
Man. I’m a bit rough around the edges bud. I mean I’ll tell you. But hey, I get the same satisfaction out of doing it so it’s like I see a picture and hey I just think to myself if I ever run out of tobacco, I’ve got like 200 pages of stuff.

Dave Dye (01:26:47):
That’s Jackson poll mate, Jerry Jackson poll.

Leigh Chalker (01:26:52):
Yeah, well

Alex Major (01:26:54):
Have you guys started playing around with digitally though? Have you guys started playing around digitally? Is it scary or not like it or just the feelings wrong or?

Dave Dye (01:27:05):
I do most of my stuff digitally now. You do? Yeah. Yeah. No, I have done it. Yeah, I do do it and I do need touch-ups in it. Of course it’s easier in once you scan your art and then you’ve got to change something, just do it in the lip studio paint with a tablet.

Alex Major (01:27:29):
Once the first iPad came out, because I always walked around for a sketchbook with me and I always drawing and first iPad came out and there was no stylist support and I was drawing with my fingers and I was like, ah, my sketchbooks were piling up and I keep having to because I can’t just carry paper with me everywhere I goes. Most of the times I have to throw ’em away and stuff like that. And then now it’s this thing’s with me all the time and I’m like even my finger, I’m fine better. I can’t go back to natural stuff when I have to do events and do caricaturing. It’s the only time I’ll go to traditional media.

Dave Dye (01:28:05):
Oh right. Yeah.

Alex Major (01:28:06):
So I’m just surprised. I’m just always curious to see how other people, some people because I dunno, for me it was like I always was frustrating that I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ruined carpets and stuff with spilling India ink or something. So I do like the things first I was just getting fine liner tips and then when you read magazines and you hear professional ink is use India ink. I try to teach myself with brushes and stuff like that. And then yeah, it was everything was just messy. It’s still messy now, but at least there’s no ink

Dave Dye (01:28:41):
I reckon,

Leigh Chalker (01:28:42):
Mate. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way mate. I think as long as you’re being creative and you find that comfortable realm that you are in, then man lights a fire under your bum then man go for it. For me personally, I mean being isolated and being 43 and only having just in July in 2020 releasing my first comment, I’m sort of filled of questions that this opportunity allows me to ask what people brush salt, like what we’ve been speaking about because I haven’t had that option of being able to go to me mate’s place and say, mate, you’re using a Faber castle like Xs, what do you think of the two 50 grand paper? They’d look at you like dickhead, just jump on the Xbox. You know what I mean? And it’s like that’s what I’m appreciating about this man. So I love hearing those sorts of stories regardless of digital pen and paper, traditional, whatever you want to call it. As long as the output is creative and it’s your thing hell and do it

Dave Dye (01:30:06):
What you use Zach? Yeah. I

Isaac George (01:30:20):
Find they don’t bleed when them and it’s pretty much all by hand.

Dave Dye (01:30:48):
I haven’t never used a,

Isaac George (01:30:52):
I don’t use cop, I use Pro Duo, I use Audi have a good, they put out every now in a while I use everything.

Dave Dye (01:31:05):
Oh okay. I suppose I call cop like a generic thing.

Isaac George (01:31:09):
It’s just marker really. It’s all the same. Yeah,

Dave Dye (01:31:13):
Right. What’d you have there, ed? What were you handing up? Showing

Edmund Kearsley (01:31:18):
Up? When I do black and white stuff, they could do these ones. This is all hand knitted as well.

Dave Dye (01:31:26):
Oh right. Oh yeah. Well I like the hand letter and I reckon it’s great. Yeah,

Edmund Kearsley (01:31:32):
I use digital fonts for my superhero stuff, but I like to hand letter the black and white. I used the Copic Multilayers and the PMA microns are really good.

Leigh Chalker (01:31:44):
They’re a good pen men. I’ve used them in the past. They’re a good pen.

Edmund Kearsley (01:31:49):
I find they draw nicer on the paper, but the codebooks are really good too. And this one’s a 0.005 or

Dave Dye (01:32:01):
They pretty small.

Edmund Kearsley (01:32:03):
It’s really small. They break really easy too, but that’s how I was getting the really fine lines on the pants and stuff.

Dave Dye (01:32:13):
The shade there? Yeah,

Edmund Kearsley (01:32:15):
Yeah.

Leigh Chalker (01:32:17):
When you were using those pens, man, did you find just pressing too hard? Was screwing up the nibs? Pushing the nibs into,

Edmund Kearsley (01:32:26):
Yeah, because I’ve got a pretty heavy hand so they do wear out fairly

Leigh Chalker (01:32:29):
Quick.

Isaac George (01:32:31):
That’s why before you know it, look at, I broke it

Alex Major (01:32:44):
While talking. I finished my drawing so

Edmund Kearsley (01:32:46):
Oh no.

Alex Major (01:32:48):
So there you guys go.

Dave Dye (01:32:49):
Hang on. I thought it was finished before mate.

Alex Major (01:32:53):
I just added a bit more tones and shadows and stuff.

Dave Dye (01:32:57):
Yeah. Excellent. Well done.

Alex Major (01:33:00):
So that’ll go on Instagram today because I’m blocked on TikTok.

Dave Dye (01:33:06):
That’s a nice one. Sloppy well done. Too much twerking.

Alex Major (01:33:11):
No, I don’t know. They used to have basically on TikTok there was like whatever, I just put drawings of animations of cats and that did okay. And then I had this older animation where I just had an animated Japanese school girl lighting up her fight on fire and that got a lot of Koreans somehow super went viral debate. So I don’t know why there were debating went viral, went a couple of hundred thousand views and then the other posts went back to normal and then every time I posted this girl fighting it got a couple of hundred thousand views. I was like alright. And so now I’m posting this all the time and the first time I kind of got banned and I told them why are you guys, what’s the community guideline? It’s just a girl fighting and then they put it back on but other people complained but they stopped it but I don’t know what happened. They gave me a one week ban and I wrote them. I said, can you guys tell me what guideline I’m breaking so I don’t do it again? You guys said it’s not the girl fighting and that’s all I’m posting, so I don’t know. Couldn’t post so there you go. But I looked at my analytics. Most of them are like 8-year-old girls that follow my account.

Dave Dye (01:34:25):
60. That’s my demo,

Alex Major (01:34:30):
That’s my demo. Don’t touch it.

Dave Dye (01:34:34):
Don’t

Alex Major (01:34:34):
Want any competition.

Dave Dye (01:34:39):
What were you using on your page Peter? I

Peter Wilson (01:34:47):
Went to Officeworks and bought one of these mechanical pencils. Liked it just because it’s come to really nothing special about it. So I bought like 30 more so I never run out.

Dave Dye (01:35:00):
I like it so much. I bought the company,

Peter Wilson (01:35:03):
But hey,

Dave Dye (01:35:04):
It’s

Leigh Chalker (01:35:04):
Nice you do find a pen, you like, hey, even the feel in your fingers and stuff today. Absolutely. Yeah, I agree. Yeah, I’ve had that. Yeah, sure.

Peter Wilson (01:35:14):
The refills are really cheap and easy to get, so I’ve got heaps of lead and the erasers, it just works out really well. I always start with this, whatever I’m doing, that’s where I start and then I usually get a digital.

Dave Dye (01:35:27):
Right. Cool. Nice. You scan it and then dig, you link it.

Peter Wilson (01:35:33):
Sometimes I just take a photo of it.

Dave Dye (01:35:36):
Oh yeah

Peter Wilson (01:35:36):
And just load it that way.

Dave Dye (01:35:38):
Yeah, you’ve got to be careful. You’ve got it nice and square though. When you take your photo, you don’t have any dramas with that. You’re happy with it all turns out or you can do that. Okay.

Peter Wilson (01:35:53):
If it’s a really particular picture, I’ll scan it in if I really need it to be accurate. But usually it’s more of a guide, like I sort of just rough it anyway so if it doesn’t go in perfect, it’s fine.

Dave Dye (01:36:05):
Yeah, yeah.

Alex Major (01:36:07):
So Peter, you actually have a scanner.

Peter Wilson (01:36:11):
My sound is messing up. I know.

Alex Major (01:36:14):
Do you have a scanner or do you go someplace? I haven’t seen a scanner for sale years, like a scanner. It’s not that important. If we can’t get this through, I’m okay without the answer. I’ll sleep

Dave Dye (01:36:33):
You alright Peter? No, no. Sound’s cutting out. I think

Alex Major (01:36:42):
It’s just bit convenient. I ask the tough questions. I’m having

Peter Wilson (01:36:44):
Some technical difficulty. If you can hear me,

Dave Dye (01:36:47):
We can

Leigh Chalker (01:36:48):
Hear you. Yes.

Peter Wilson (01:36:51):
Blink twice.

Alex Major (01:36:51):
If there’s someone pointing a gun at you off

Peter Wilson (01:36:53):
Camera

Dave Dye (01:36:58):
You can line. You’ve dropped out today.

Alex Major (01:37:04):
Still sell. I’ve seen a scanner for sale for a long time.

Edmund Kearsley (01:37:07):
Alex looked behind.

Isaac George (01:37:08):
I’ve seen scan behind.

Edmund Kearsley (01:37:10):
See next to the tv, the black box.

Alex Major (01:37:13):
Oh you got one? Oh okay. Yeah,

Edmund Kearsley (01:37:15):
So scans a three.

Alex Major (01:37:17):
Okay. Is it a printer as well? Is it a printer as well? So you it can

Edmund Kearsley (01:37:23):
Print on, you could print the blue line onto art board as well because it’s got the back feeding thing so you can ink onto

Isaac George (01:37:32):
The nice, the blue lines. Ed and I truly do mean this in the nicest way. Fuck.

Dave Dye (01:37:45):
That was

Leigh Chalker (01:37:45):
Nice Ed. Ed, you better send him Rose.

Alex Major (01:37:50):
What did you do to

Dave Dye (01:37:55):
Fuck? You could get it printed out at Officeworks on true. Yeah, too much. That’s a hike and then they’re competent and they don’t know how to do things. Yeah, that’s nice Ad for Officeworks. Excellent works. It’s good to have everything within reaching me desk. I can scan, I can colour, I can draw everything just here. My scanners over here, my computer’s in front of me. The drawing boards on my lap. That’s what I draw on. Did

Leigh Chalker (01:38:36):
You make that yourself?

Dave Dye (01:38:37):
No, I got this through the mail order. Actually I signed up for one of those How to be an illustrator back in the, do you remember the post magazine Australian Post?

Leigh Chalker (01:38:50):
Yes I do. And there was here as well?

Dave Dye (01:38:54):
Yeah, with the post at the back on that page used to be one.

Leigh Chalker (01:38:58):
Do I remember them Dave? I didn’t see any drawing boards in there though.

Dave Dye (01:39:05):
If you signed up to do the course, you’ve got a drum board.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:39:15):
I had a friend of mine actually won the home bloke thing they used to do in the back and yeah, my mate actually won the $250 home bloke or whatever it was called. Oh right.

Dave Dye (01:39:24):
Super

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:39:25):
Super don of the month. He was, I was like 25 years ago and he is got kids now and we’re not allowed to mention it at all

Dave Dye (01:39:37):
On camera during the live stream

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:39:39):
In front of the kids, I haven’t his name is

Alex Major (01:39:40):
That in front of the kids? You’re not allowed to or just in front of him so when he goes away can

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:39:44):
Front of the kids. Yeah, I did a speech, I do a speech at all these big, I did one of his 20th. His 30th, he’s 40th and every time I was like, oh, there’s always that time where he won that and then just look over and

Dave Dye (01:39:57):
Get the

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:39:58):
Grimace. But those in the know we have a laugh and yeah,

Dave Dye (01:40:03):
You still got a copy of that issue though?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:40:06):
No, I never got it. I never heard about it until after the fact.

Dave Dye (01:40:10):
That’s a show. He’ll probably get one on eBay or something.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:40:14):
Yeah, he knew he would win because he is well endowed and so he got the money and didn’t tell anyone. But then his boss who was cool with it, but his boss was a subscriber to the magazine and was just like, oh, I know that penis.

Leigh Chalker (01:40:31):
How close was that working relationship?

Dave Dye (01:40:36):
There’s exactly, there can have

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:40:44):
Raise like you’ve already got one

Leigh Chalker (01:40:48):
Did out in the

Dave Dye (01:40:56):
Bloody.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:40:58):
You got some balls showing up to work today,

Dave Dye (01:41:00):
Man,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:41:06):
When he was fired, his boss gave him the shaft.

Alex Major (01:41:15):
Don’t worry.

Dave Dye (01:41:21):
Luckily didn’t get a severance package. Yeah,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:41:24):
I do have a bongo in the other room. If you give me a minute

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:41:35):
Maybe we’ll

Alex Major (01:41:36):
Wrap up. Thanks for waiting for me to finish my drawing by the way.

Dave Dye (01:41:40):
Oh, not problem Alex. Not a problem. Well thank you. Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:41:47):
I’ll go through the list here as you are on the screen. So thank you Ed. Thank you Alex. Thank you Zach.

Dave Dye (01:41:54):
Thank you Rob.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:41:56):
I won’t thank myself. Thank you Dave. Thank you Lee. Thank you Peter who got kicked out and thank you Duncan for trying to get on and not being able to because your iPad just refused to let you on.

Dave Dye (01:42:06):
Yeah, that’s a Shane, thanks Shane for hosting. Oh, thank you. Thanks Shane.

Leigh Chalker (01:42:13):
Thank you Shane. It was a great pleasure to meet all of you guys. I hope the absolute best comes from all of your endeavours. Good on you. You chances.

Dave Dye (01:42:22):
Thanks mate. And back at you and next week of drawing a draught and a trench coat. I look forward to those. Of course. See

Alex Major (01:42:36):
Everyone. See you guys later.

Dave Dye (01:42:41):
See.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:42:45):
Well that was fun. I forgot what was actually in all the way through. I only watched half of that. So yeah, thanks for watching that. That was our first episode of Drink and Draw. So you can see how much the show has grown, how much the people in the show have grown. The format of the show has grown own and that all started this year. So yeah, so that’s a lot of growth in one year. The drink and draw show has become quite a bit of a thing in itself outside of Comex, although it is about Comex, of course Comex Studios was what started it all. It’s become its own thing. So now I just realised I have gone and ended this video and not told other people how to get

Dave Dye (01:43:31):
In.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:43:33):
So I will just quickly do that.

Dave Dye (01:43:37):
I

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:43:40):
Sorry about that. Yeah, so thank you to Rusty Mass rejection. I think Dave Di and Peter Lane said Good Day and Loppy Tunes and Nick May, Dan May Rad, Bagga even. Hello and Vicious and Monsour Bean. I think that’s pronounced. Thanks for popping in and checking out the old replay. I had a lot of fun watching that. I hope you guys did it as well. So I’ll move that. How do I close that? Okay, so I haven’t done everything on this before because I didn’t know how to change that then. So yeah, so I hope everyone’s having a good New Year’s Eve to those who are having a good old party. Congratulations on being able to do that in these covid times. I hope you have a great night. Hope you have a great New Year’s celebration. Don’t get too drunk or get too drunk, whatever you’re into. Thank you. I’ll put that up. I can actually put these up now. Absolutely. My pleasure, Dan. Absolutely my pleasure. Thank you. As a devoted fan to the show, I see you every week now and you even send in pictures, which is awesome. I encourage that to everyone. I will actually put up a banner for everyone

(01:45:17)
That’s the wrong address.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:45:22):
Okay,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:45:24):
So if I edit that and put in the right address so we’re not technically a drink and draw tonight, we’re a Aus Comex show, new Year’s Eve special, so people don’t need to actually be drawing. But if you do wish to draw along to the show, I think some of the people coming on will be drawing. Some of ’em might not be. I’m not sure the Christmas special wasn’t about drawing and some of the people came on and they drew. I don’t know, it’s hard to tell. I will just save that. Let’s put that across the bottom. No one’s on yet, but you can ask me questions. Thanks Michelle. So am I. It’s grown a lot, hasn’t it? I don’t know if you watched any of that old one, the original episode, but it’s definitely changed a lot. There was a lot of talk of pens used in that one. I forgot that happened that the show was extended so long to talk about pens, so that was pretty cool. So yeah, I’m a little disorganised. I got into watching that instead of organising people to come in and join me for this part of the show. So those watching who can send in a comment, what have you liked about what Comex has done this year so far? What should you do more of is probably the better term.

(01:47:06)
Thanks Gary.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:47:09):
I

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:47:14):
Know there’s a delay between this and getting out to people, so because I’m quite surprised actually sometimes when I walk to the next room, the difference between my computer and that computer and yeah, so pretty much what the original idea for this show was a little, now that I think about. It was a little self-indulgent, a little gross even. But it was about getting people together to talk about what it is that they enjoyed about Comex this year. Even what they didn’t enjoy, if there was something that we could improve on. Oh, that’s awesome, Dan. Yes. Got you back into drawing. I wish it’d done the same for me, but I have less time now that I do this. So yeah, I forced myself to draw for the Wednesday show now. Hopefully that will turn into me doing more drawing as well. I feel your pain on the not drawing as often as you’d like. And yes, it is also good to see your bro, I must admit. I enjoy seeing your bro as well. So yeah, so this was a bit of a self-indulgent little thing here where I wanted to hear about what people, how Comex had it affected ’em this year because I mean Comex has been around since I can give you the exact date. I started the website on the 23rd of the ninth 2019.

(01:48:45)
And

(01:48:49)
Then in Boxing Day that 2019, I renamed the site to comics. It was called Comic Escapee before that. And then I found out there was something else called Comic Scape. So I changed it. You’ve probably heard this three a thousand times. I’m sorry if I’m boring anyone. And then 2020, we did a lot of things. We connected with a lot of people. The inspiration to do the calendar came about, but then the calendar actually becoming a reality and actually doing it was the 2021 thing. And that led to Comex Studio, which led to comic shop. So this year has been amazing for everything I’ve been doing with Comex, which just started off as a directory for comic shops. That’s all it started as. And now it’s turned into this and this year has been, wow, I published, I was involved in publishing four comics, presents issue one presents issue two presents, issue one presents new I issue two. We’re organising three at the moment doing Kickstarter for it in the first month of next year. Yeah, so this has been an amazing year for me and I just wanted to hear if that’s been the same for everyone else. I guess a little self-indulgent I guess. But yeah, I mean who knows where this show will actually go, but that’s just where it started. That was the idea for it. So yeah, we’ve got some people here, so I will just drag in Poor old Duncan. Hey Duncan.

Duncan Pranevicius (01:50:34):
Howdy, howdy.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:50:36):
I’ll put it to this screen here so it’s not so full on until there’s more of us. So how are you this afternoon? You just had a birthday party by the looks beside you? Behind you?

Duncan Pranevicius (01:50:49):
I did my son’s 11-year-old birthday. Oh, nice. 11th birthday. Birthday, yeah. Exciting, exciting. Big week.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:51:03):
Yeah.

Duncan Pranevicius (01:51:04):
Yeah, another birthday and another 15 days producing children so close to each other.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:51:17):
Oh, that makes you broke the same time of year every year. There you go. Oh

Duncan Pranevicius (01:51:21):
Yeah, exactly. Yeah. You spend the entire year saving up right until the end. Then they take it all.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:51:27):
Take it all.

Duncan Pranevicius (01:51:28):
Exactly.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:51:30):
So this is the self-indulgent part, not necessarily this year, maybe over the last two years. What has Comex provided for you personally?

Duncan Pranevicius (01:51:42):
Pretty much everything’s all happened this year I think. And it’s pretty much been everything I’ve gone from seems

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:51:47):
Really,

Duncan Pranevicius (01:51:49):
Yeah, I mean end of 2019 to 2020 I was pretty much just trying to, I was just jingly putting together comics and seeing what I can do and putting things up on comicology and not really knowing where to go and what to do with it. And yeah, it wasn’t until the beginning of this year you pretty much facilitated making actual real comics form, so Oh sweet. Yeah, that’s pretty much, that’s been it. This has been the whole beginning of my journey I guess, into doing this has been through you. You facilitated the entire thing, so thank you for that, Shane.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:52:40):
My pleasure. That’s pretty much, I mean it’s not what I started this for. I’d be lying if I said that’s what I started Comex for. I started Comex just to, well I started as comic scape just so there’s no confusion to be a directory for websites. And during that time I found out about the indie scene. I went, I wanted to have more to do with this and then when I realised, hang on, I’ve been collecting comics since the late eighties and I’d never heard of the Australian indie scene. I’m sure there’s more people like me. So I decided to start promoting you guys and then it just kind of snowballed from there.

Duncan Pranevicius (01:53:19):
Yeah, I had no idea. I didn’t know there was an entire community. I didn’t have anyone else in Australia doing comics or making comics. I had no clue about anything. Again, through comics has pretty much just opened the door to all this stuff and noir presents Noir one was the first comic I’ve actually had produced. So I was there my first produced work.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:53:47):
Awesome, that’s awesome.

Duncan Pranevicius (01:53:50):
So it’s been a long, long journey. Actually I think it was January, 2020 that I first put the prototype version of Bin Kitty on Comicology and in January, 2022 it’s going to be an actual proper book. Pretty cool.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:54:15):
Happy New Year, Lee. Well I think you’re jumping on soon anyway, but did you see any of the flashback episode? I think, yeah, actually you commented

Duncan Pranevicius (01:54:26):
So you had to Yeah, I watched the whole thing. You saw some

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:54:28):
Of it. The whole

Duncan Pranevicius (01:54:29):
Thing is I’ve never seen it. It was funny. Yeah, I’ve never seen it before. I skipped the start, I didn’t want to see myself falling out of the strength. But yeah, I watched the rest when I disappeared for the last, I watched the rest of it and I was supposed to be there.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:54:48):
Yes, you were a black screen each time you came up. I think we didn’t even get to see your face

Duncan Pranevicius (01:54:53):
Thing just kept resetting. What you resetting on me?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:54:57):
Oh well I think we sorted out by the second one.

Duncan Pranevicius (01:55:00):
Yeah, I did. I got it all figured out. It’s been smooth ever since

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:55:06):
There’s a comment for you. Thanks Dan. I dunno if you can see

Duncan Pranevicius (01:55:09):
I can. It’s up on the screen. Thank you very much Dan, I appreciate that.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:55:14):
Yeah, and I will agree your art is amazing. You have a special treat for us next year. I’m looking forward to that. A cover of one of our specials. So yes.

Duncan Pranevicius (01:55:24):
Oh yeah, I got a lot going on.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:55:28):
Yes. So I think Lee’s ready so I might bring him in. Give us a thumbs up if you’re ready, Lee. Okay, cool. You look like you’re getting ready, that’s all. Hello. Hey Lee and Morgan, bring yourself in whenever you are ready. Yeah. Hey Lee.

Leigh Chalker (01:55:51):
Firecrackers have started here early mate. Oh,

Duncan Pranevicius (01:55:54):
Already they’re doing it here as well. They’re gone right now here. Hey

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:55:57):
Morgan,

Leigh Chalker (01:55:58):
Too keen guys. Hey, how are you dude? Good. Hello Duncan too mate. Sorry

Duncan Pranevicius (01:56:06):
Audi Lee.

Leigh Chalker (01:56:07):
Good day mate. All.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:56:11):
So this has been a big Lee, a big year for you Lee as well. You hammered out a lot of work this year and you were, so this is the part where I get to be self-indulgent again. I’m going to use that word a lot tonight I think. So how has Comex influenced, helped not helped you personally in this last year?

Leigh Chalker (01:56:43):
It’s helped me heaps, man. Like it’s helped everyone in the community.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:56:52):
Oh there we go. Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (01:56:54):
Yeah, get in there. That must

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:56:58):
Been close.

Leigh Chalker (01:56:59):
I think they’re two yards over, man.

Duncan Pranevicius (01:57:03):
Lee’s actually in downtown Detroit right now.

Leigh Chalker (01:57:07):
No,

(01:57:09)
I’ve moved to granny flat to downtown Detroit. Yeah man, I thought I’d try that quite living out for a bit, but it’s much, turns out it’s exactly like Townsville. Can’t believe it. But no, COMEX has been awesome mate for everyone involved, not just myself. It’s allowed me to meet other people, get out of my, just doing my own thing. Not really knowing, being able to talk to people for advice and touch base and then find yourself chatting off and working, enjoying each other’s company on the drink and draws and all the other occasions that we have. And that’s been good for me. Yeah, just to get out of that little hole I guess, and come out and meet some other people. So that’s the most positive thing for me.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:58:02):
Awesome. Yeah.

Leigh Chalker (01:58:04):
Yeah. And I’ve enjoyed everyone. You can tell because I actually set the fireworks off earlier. Just say the grand entrance. Nice. Yeah, I’m a thinker mate. Good on you Tony.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:58:23):
You too Tony. Have a great new year.

Leigh Chalker (01:58:29):
Yes,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:58:32):
Sorry, I forget that. I haven’t got other hosts to do stuff for me with the normal, what do you call it, drink and draw. Although this is not a drink and draw. This is the Y’s comic show on New Year’s Eve. It’s got the logo up in the top corner there. Up there over there. Whoever we got Rob.

Leigh Chalker (01:58:54):
Hey Rob,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:58:56):
Goodday Max,

Leigh Chalker (01:58:59):
Let’s

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:58:59):
Crack cracker lacking.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:59:01):
He’s in his singlet, he’s out the back.

Leigh Chalker (01:59:04):
He’ll be

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:59:06):
Heresies.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:59:09):
I’m at the beach, I’m at my palatial estate. There we go. Look at that. Yeah, hi. Oh nice. What’s cracking

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:59:24):
Some of us? This is

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (01:59:25):
Going to be a thing.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (01:59:26):
I was going to say that’s going to be bad. Yeah. So yeah, pretty much all this was was me to say GA to everyone for the new year. Celebrate the year. That’s just been because it’s been a great year for Comex. Just so much has happened. Stuff I’d never dreamed I would’ve been doing. I’m now part of a publishing house and a comic shop, so I just thought I invite everyone else to come on and tell everyone how great I am. So yeah. So nice self-indulgent episode of Aus Comic Show.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:00:03):
Are you going to use that word a lot tonight?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:00:06):
Yes, I am

Leigh Chalker (02:00:07):
Already has.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:00:09):
I already have. I’ve used it quite a lot.

Leigh Chalker (02:00:11):
I think we’re up to five uses so far.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:00:14):
Oh, I think we’re beyond five. We need, although I was using a lot before I started the camera, I was using a lot before I was practising self. That

Leigh Chalker (02:00:21):
Doesn’t count. It doesn’t count if it’s not live. Yes it does.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:00:29):
How are you Lee?

Leigh Chalker (02:00:31):
Good, Rob, how are you?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:00:34):
I’m good mate.

Leigh Chalker (02:00:35):
That’s

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:00:36):
Good. Saw some artwork he sent me.

Leigh Chalker (02:00:41):
Yeah, that was a good one. It was a fun one. Yes. Oh mate hasn’t seen any of it yet though.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:00:53):
Speaker of projects.

Dave Dye (02:00:55):
Good day all.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:00:56):
Hello David.

Leigh Chalker (02:00:58):
Hey Dave.

Dave Dye (02:01:01):
Going well.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:01:05):
Hello David.

Dave Dye (02:01:07):
Oh,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:01:08):
Someone’s got their in the background.

Dave Dye (02:01:11):
That’s probably me. Hang on,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:01:14):
We’ll be on one of your tabs.

Dave Dye (02:01:17):
That’s me. I think it’s me.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:01:21):
Yeah, it stopped now. There we go. Mute.

Dave Dye (02:01:28):
Yeah, but I couldn’t find the link and I was going to, it kept sending me to the YouTube channel and

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:01:34):
Oh yeah,

Dave Dye (02:01:36):
I had a look on Discord and I couldn’t see it and anyway, here I am.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:01:44):
So anyone got plans for tonight?

Dave Dye (02:01:47):
Hi James.

Leigh Chalker (02:01:50):
Good new.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:01:50):
You’re looking at it mate.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:01:53):
Sitting at the beach. I’m sitting at my computer doing it live. Ringing the lounge.

Dave Dye (02:02:05):
Sorry,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:02:06):
My internet’s really bad so I’m

Dave Dye (02:02:08):
Where are you at? Rob? You at the beach you said?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:02:11):
Yeah, I’m at Rosebud. Oh yeah, in Moore’s house.

Dave Dye (02:02:15):
Excellent mate. Going for, here you go, Rob.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:02:20):
Skinny

Dave Dye (02:02:21):
Dipping. Alright lovely. Zach, go for a swim. Smashing going

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:02:32):
To waters. Sorry Dave. What?

Dave Dye (02:02:35):
Good weather to go for a swim down the beach?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:02:38):
Yeah, just I logged on at eight o’clock my time. Found out it was at nine o’clock, so we just ran down to the beach, threw the kids in, bought a dolphin, came back.

Dave Dye (02:02:49):
You love swimming at night. Fantastic. Love it. You’ll agree with me or disagree?

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:03:01):
I think I agree with you. I hear the

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:03:02):
Sharks love it as well.

Dave Dye (02:03:05):
Didn’t you hear what I said? Swimming at night’s bloody great. We’re not as excited about it as you are. Obviously

Leigh Chalker (02:03:15):
I wouldn’t even put my foot in the ocean up this way mate. Likely to get taken off by something.

Dave Dye (02:03:22):
When I was a young fella, we used to go, we lived out in the country, we went to Sydney Manley, my grandparents lived at Manley and they were only spitting distance from the key where they had, you look at fish and stuff, aquarium and there’s a shark proof fence there. You know that and you could go swimming at night. Beautiful. Oh it was great. Yeah, really good. And I remember swimming down the local swimming hole when I was at RA in the night. That was bloody great. Just beautiful different, different ambiance. You know that word? That’s French ambiance. You know what it means. Is it pants optional or are we talking fudgy smugglers or what are we talking? I would’ve been wearing positives. It wouldn’t have been skinny dipping. Although when I was camping sometimes when we went camping you just jumped in with whatever, whatever, whatever. Yeah, it might’ve been a bit of skinny dip. There you go. Very french commando. Is it? No. Yeah, try it sometime. I advise. I highly recommend it.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:04:58):
We used to swim in the dam at night, but yeah, you’d never catch me in a river or the ocean at night.

Dave Dye (02:05:03):
Oh right. Yeah. Well you’ve got to know your swimming holes. You don’t go in some random hole that it might be full of snags or anything like that. Essentially. New age guys, you’ve got to watch ’em.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:05:16):
Yes. Deadly in the darkest waters.

Dave Dye (02:05:21):
Rob’s got a bad connection. He can’t hear anything.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:05:27):
He’s in there twice.

Dave Dye (02:05:31):
One’s enough. Come on. Can we handle two veggies? Is that better?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:05:39):
Wait, can I hear you now?

Dave Dye (02:05:41):
We can hear you now. I

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:05:42):
Can hear you now. Yeah, no, can you hear us though? I’m working on it.

Dave Dye (02:05:50):
You going to the toilet or something? Please don’t go to the dining. Water toilet.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:05:56):
Please don’t go to the toilet. Nah. Some

Dave Dye (02:06:10):
People might have swimming pools. Do you

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:06:12):
Just, oh, there we go. Swimming pool. We’ve got a swimming pool behind us. Not here, but I can hear the kids even now.

Dave Dye (02:06:18):
Yeah, swimming at night school.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:06:20):
Not your kids. The kids next door. Apologies.

Dave Dye (02:06:25):
Yeah, I haven’t got a swimming pool, but if you did, you’d be out there swimming at night. It’s bloody great mate.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:06:31):
Oh yeah.

Dave Dye (02:06:32):
Or during a thunderstorm during rain. That’s good too. Now you’ve all done that.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:06:39):
Oh yeah. Swimming pools definitely.

Dave Dye (02:06:41):
Yeah, at nighttime. Yeah. I mean many party

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:06:45):
Swimming pools

Dave Dye (02:06:46):
In the rain. Rain time when it’s rain,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:06:49):
It shouldn’t be. It’s

Dave Dye (02:06:50):
Be 41 here tomorrow.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:06:52):
Oh, screw that. Yeah, gross.

Leigh Chalker (02:06:55):
41.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:06:57):
That’s more gross than my self-indulgence.

Dave Dye (02:07:00):
Lauren had that the other day for Christmas day. Ouch. Share that for Christmas day would’ve been cranking. Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (02:07:13):
We were pretty good up here actually. It wasn’t too over the top I don’t think. Luckily enough.

Dave Dye (02:07:19):
Alright, that’s good mate. Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (02:07:21):
Usually it’s absolutely boiling here

Dave Dye (02:07:25):
At Christmas. No cyclones on the horizon.

Leigh Chalker (02:07:29):
No, because there’s been heaps of tropical rain then. So I think we’re due 300 mil in two days up here over the next two

Dave Dye (02:07:39):
Or three days. Right.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:07:41):
Oh wow.

Leigh Chalker (02:07:42):
Hundred mil. Two months worth of rainfall in three days or

Dave Dye (02:07:45):
Something. That’s a foot.

Leigh Chalker (02:07:47):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s clean. And gutters and dig out holes for drains and shit, man. Getting ready. So nothing floods and it

Dave Dye (02:08:01):
So what did Santa bring you drawing kit? New

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:08:07):
Picture. I been, I must been naughty this year. Not too naughty. I didn’t get any coal. I just got in between. I got nothing. No, no. To be honest, my sister, I dunno if you guys can see it up the top there. My sister gave me a teenage mutant ninja turtle van.

Dave Dye (02:08:29):
Oh, alright. Okay.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:08:31):
I’ll just tip this so you can

Dave Dye (02:08:33):
See it. Is that that little pink thing? Oh, the van at the top yellow. The van.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:08:38):
Is that the original retro one that got rereleased? I think so, yeah. That’s cool. So that was a nice surprise. I just went to breakfast with my father and he went, oh, here’s

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:08:51):
A present sister gave you.

Dave Dye (02:08:53):
That was good. Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:08:56):
I’m like, oh, Merry Christmas. That’s my present for her.

Dave Dye (02:09:00):
You had something for her. That’s good.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:09:02):
No I didn’t. I had the word Merry Christmas.

Dave Dye (02:09:06):
Pass that on please. Gift rabbit.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:09:11):
Follow me in you guys. They followed me into the room.

Dave Dye (02:09:19):
You need one of them zapps mate.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:09:22):
I was going to say it would’ve been shocking out there.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:09:25):
Yeah, I thought this would be cool. Nice beachy weather.

Dave Dye (02:09:31):
Bang

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:09:32):
Away yourself. So sizzle. Wonder what will happen.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:09:35):
Sizzle self indulge yourself, mate. What are we doing?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:09:40):
Tell us. I can talk about what’s coming

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:09:43):
Up in the new one.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:09:44):
What’s coming up in the new year? I’ve actually written a list so I don’t forget anything this time. It’s actually quite the list. So 2022 is going to be huge for me personally, not just for Comex. I’ve started a marketing degree so I can better serve my clients. I’ve restarted my owl. It’s not just my company, Sparta Digital. We’ve relaunched that and we’re going to start looking for clients again, which will help sponsor Comex. It does cost a bit and going to kick some ass with my main client. And then there’s all the stuff for Comex, which is huge. We’ve got the Kickstarter for presents three and presents new R three in January, probably about mid next month that’ll start. Issue four will be in March. The horror special we’re hoping will be due around May. Issue five will be about June all age special. We’re hoping we’ll have that by June. And the issue six will be September. And then in November we’re looking to get all the entries for the queer special. And then in December is when issue seven is due issue seven sevens for you are and presents. And then they we’ll be prepping for the suspense or crime special. We haven’t really given it a name yet. That will be early 2023.

(02:11:20)
That’s just the X Comics anthologies. Then we’ve got, at the very least, we’ll be releasing some Bronwyn comics, some Bronwyn, the further adventures, Bronwyn and the Wrath of the Curse crossover, Ben Kitty Battle for possible foes, final Dragon, and hopefully many more. So Cirus will be getting his own comic next year hopefully.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:11:46):
And more

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:11:47):
And more. Yeah, the and more. Sounds like the really interesting title. That one, I can’t tell you too much about it at the moment. It’s a bit of a hush hush,

Dave Dye (02:11:56):
But yeah, right. See how it develops when George, ready Duncan, Ben Kitty. January 27th. Oh, it’ll be the first one off. First Cab off the rank then sis?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:12:09):
No, actually Battle for Bussle will be.

Dave Dye (02:12:11):
Oh right.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:12:12):
We’re just not doing a Kickstarter for Battle for Bustle. So he’ll be out first. And then the Kickstarter for Ben Kitty is late January.

Dave Dye (02:12:20):
Right.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:12:22):
So we’ll be releasing Ben Kitty probably late February. Excellent. And the other, I guess there’s one more thing that I forgot to mention. We’re looking to do the calendar again, but this time just 12 months.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:12:40):
Ooh.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:12:41):
Yeah, that has been spoken about from with a few people. So we’re like what the hell? We’ll do it again this time. It’ll be a 12 month calendar though.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:12:51):
And what do you think? Will you get 12 new people?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:12:54):
12 new people? I want to give 12 new people a go at it. Yeah.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:12:59):
Will you get 12 new people or of

Dave Dye (02:13:02):
Yeah, 12 new ones.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:13:04):
Oh, did you not hear me? Sorry,

Dave Dye (02:13:06):
12 newbies mate. Yeah,

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:13:08):
Wicked.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:13:09):
Yeah, so all new people and we’re going to try to do that every year. 12 new people every year.

Dave Dye (02:13:14):
Is it going to be January to December or is it going to be June to July or July?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:13:20):
No, January to December. A normal year. We’re going to try to get entries in by mid next year so that we can do a 2023 calendar.

Dave Dye (02:13:30):
Yep. Well you’ve only got to do one picture, so it’s not like doing a comic. You knock it up in a week.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:13:42):
I know. Not everyone’s as efficient as you deadly Dave.

Dave Dye (02:13:49):
Well I can try.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:13:57):
Yeah. So that’s the plans for Comex next year. So I mean, I thought this year was huge. If all that happens, which I’m fingers crossed we can do it all. Next year’s going to be massive.

Dave Dye (02:14:09):
Yeah. How’s the shop going? You’re selling a few things sweet. Or do you have to move a bit over for Christmas?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:14:17):
Still being open? Nothing’s smooth the last couple of days, but I mean I haven’t been promoting it as much as I say, and I keep saying that, which makes me feel really bad. But I did run some ads just to see if we got some traction, get people who wouldn’t normally know about Comex to know about Comex. We got no sales from them, but we got a couple of hundred people saw the site at least. So

Dave Dye (02:14:44):
Yeah. Yeah, I noticed there was a comment, I was watching the YouTube channel that led up to this live thing and you had the old, the original first.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:15:01):
Yeah, the first drink and draw.

Dave Dye (02:15:02):
Yeah, first drink and draw. And I noticed there was a girl, I think it was a girl, mentioned that she now thanks to Drink and Draw, was aware of the local Aussie indie, what do you call it? Community and wants to get involved at some suit today. So that’s some future date. So that’s good mate. So you drawing some more participants, et cetera.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:15:31):
Oh yeah, that sounds like Michelle actually. Yeah,

Dave Dye (02:15:34):
Might’ve been Michelle. Yeah.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:15:35):
Yeah, she sends pictures in every Friday. Alright, so she’s pretty involved already. She just has been on

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:15:44):
The show. She shows Sea sells by the Sheshaw.

Dave Dye (02:15:46):
Courtney say that’s going to say that Veggie. I thought he was going to say Sea shell seaho.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:15:55):
I was trying to, but it wouldn’t happen. Just wouldn’t happen.

Dave Dye (02:15:59):
And then this name’s Michelle. Michelle sells she Michelle.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:16:04):
I got to see Michelle a few days ago. Her and Dan came down to visit.

Dave Dye (02:16:08):
Oh,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:16:09):
Awesome.

Dave Dye (02:16:10):
All right. So that’s Dan’s wife, Dan

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:16:13):
Mate, partner.

Dave Dye (02:16:14):
Partner, right. Excellent. Oh right. So yeah, I was trying to think who’s the lady that’s been sending in drawings and saying that the twigs. That’s good. Well we’ll get her on Dan on too that she said eventually she will. So that’s pretty cool. Get Dan and Phil and Michelle on the same night.

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:16:42):
So it’s now 25 minutes past my bedtime. I’m weak and get up before I go though, I’ll do the shameless plug for Comex because you haven’t asked me yet. So I’ll do the what has Comex done for you, Morgan and such and such and so forth. I’ll do that before I go. Yeah. So obviously as a writer and not an artist, I don’t do the art so much. But also to get started, you’ve got to find an artist, you’ve got to write a script, find an artist, get started, all that sort of stuff. And if you don’t know anything, you dunno anything. And that’s exactly how I started contacting artists, getting things going. No idea. Yes, the eye rolls robbed. So true, so true.

(02:17:34)
Making all the mistakes, trying to learn everything I can. But I made the cardinal error of not starting with locals at all and not even having an idea that there was an indie scene in Australia, not trying to find anyone because there’s a bit of that beer involved when you first start out and it’s a bit like Rob, you’ll get it. It’s like walking into a music shop to buy a guitar or something. Every single guitar shop or music shop you walk into, you walk in and you immediately feel like I’m an outsider. These guys, they’re all looking at me, I dunno what I’m doing and I don’t know how to play guitar and I’m useless. And you feel really, they’re all

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:18:15):
Playing stairway to heaven.

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:18:17):
That’s it. They’re all airway to heaven and you’re looking at just the lowest piece of dirt and there’s that fear that it’s going to be the same thing in a new industry that you’re trying to break into. So I suppose there’s that resistance to getting to know people. And I obviously had that initially when I first started with this sort of stuff. So one of the great things about Shane and getting to know comics and all you guys and just the community and everything is just how different it is in the comics industry and how willing people are to share their work and share things that they’ve learned and all that sort of stuff. And even just asking questions about just stuff that you don’t know and that you’ve never done it before or there’s whatever it might be, just people are so willing to share what they’ve got and what they’ve been through and everything’s so supportive and all the rest of it.

(02:19:10)
So that’s been a real eye opener for me is just this community. I’ve been doing writing for a long time and the broader writing community and novels and that sort of thing that’s also friendly and all the rest of that, but it’s also quite disparate and all over the place and there’s not that sense of cohesion. Whereas, I mean, I think I came in probably a year after you’d really started comics, but it just felt like you just slide right in and everyone’s very friendly and welcoming and there’s a community already going. So really, really invaluable for a comic creator, particularly from the writer’s side, working with other artists and writers and all that sort of stuff. So it’s been really, really great for me and just great to connect with a bunch of people and realise that the industry’s so much bigger than what I thought.

(02:20:02)
And also, I don’t have a history in comic books when I was a kid, I didn’t read comic books. That’s only later in life that I’ve gotten into them. Just knowing my God, there’s like 50 years of Aussie comics that I don’t even know about that you guys are referencing all this stuff and I have to quickly get on the web and what’s the squadron thing that everyone’s talking about and what’s torn? There’s all of these things. So it’s also been really, really cool to discover all this stuff that I didn’t even know existed. Anyway. Yeah, so big thanks from me, obviously for everything that you’re doing, Shane and the rest of you guys and the community and everything, it’s just been fantastic and super looking forward to 2022. Lots of cool stuff going to happen.

Dave Dye (02:20:50):
Where are you Morgan? What city? What town you in?

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:20:54):
I’m in Brisbane. I’m just near Siz. Yeah, just

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:20:57):
Near me in

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:20:58):
That direction.

Dave Dye (02:21:00):
Try and get to one of the conventions or a couple of ’em if you can. Either the one day or the ComicCon or the Supernova and meet a few people face to face and all that sort of stuff. It really, that really sparks you on too, mate.

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:21:19):
Yeah, will do, will do that. The plan for next year is to get stuck into that side of things as well.

Dave Dye (02:21:25):
Yeah, it’s a lot of fun too, talking to the people who are reading your comics, selling comics, selling your comics to your audience. That’s a lot of fun. And then the next time you go, people will come back and say, oh, I want to see what your next one is. And that’s even better. And people come back after reading your first one and go, oh, I like that one. I want get what’s next. You love it. That’s

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:21:53):
What it’s all about.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:21:54):
Lots of fun. Cool. Well thanks Morgan. I’d like to thank you for the awesome videos that you’ve made for us as well here at Comex. That has been amazing and also helped me out on the Comex show, the Oz Comex show, which I keep getting wrong every time I say it and I made up the name and I can’t even get it right. And yes, thank you so much. I’m looking forward to a year ahead of us really hammering out that show and really getting to know a lot more people in the industry and letting everyone else there get to know those people as well. So that’ll be really cool man. I’m looking forward to that.

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:22:34):
Sweet. Yeah, it’s a pleasure dude. It’s a pleasure and having a ball. Lots of fun. Cool. See you guys.

Dave Dye (02:22:41):
Morgan, nice

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:22:43):
To meet you. I’ll let you go out on one of your videos.

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:22:46):
Hey,

Dave Dye (02:22:48):
Very much. See?

Voice Over (02:22:54):
Are you feeling a little down, tired of reading the same old books again and again looking for something different? Why not? Head over to the comic shop now and pick yourself up some freshly inked inspiration.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:23:23):
Bit of fun there.

Dave Dye (02:23:25):
Hey Nick.

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:23:26):
Hey. Quite a graceful entrance. I do say so.

Dave Dye (02:23:31):
Hey, Rob’s back. Duncan’s gone.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:23:35):
I’m just going to say hey and I love you as my internet sucks, so I’m going to roll. But that’s,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:23:41):
Thanks Rob for popping in. Happy new. Looking forward to another year of chilling out with you at drink draws.

Rob ‘Spedsy’ Lisle (02:23:50):
Yeah, I’ll see you Friday, Lana Luca. Let’s get cracking.

Dave Dye (02:23:54):
Yeah, mate. Yeah. When’s that? Next Friday. Next Friday.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:23:58):
Next Friday,

Dave Dye (02:23:59):
Next Friday, Dave. Yeah, right. Happy New Year catcher, Rob.

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:24:10):
Frozen.

Dave Dye (02:24:16):
Frozen.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:24:17):
He’s staying in whether he wants it or not.

Dave Dye (02:24:24):
How things been going in South Wales quick.

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:24:27):
Yeah, it’s not bad. It’s pretty hot today. It’s probably feels really hot today. So we’re all house bound. No one’s really getting out. Yeah, Lauren’s in the wings too.

Dave Dye (02:24:42):
Saw that Rob there. Look at him looking very,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:24:45):
Oh, I thought we were going to have a frozen rob for a while there.

Dave Dye (02:24:47):
Yeah.

Lauren Marshall (02:24:49):
Hello.

Dave Dye (02:24:50):
Good day, Lauren.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:24:51):
Lady Ratta. How’s it

Dave Dye (02:24:52):
Going?

Lauren Marshall (02:24:54):
How are we?

Dave Dye (02:24:56):
Good. You survived Christmas. Okay.

Lauren Marshall (02:25:01):
Hey,

Dave Dye (02:25:02):
You survived Christmas Day. All right.

Lauren Marshall (02:25:05):
I did. Yeah. 42 degrees Christmas day. It was a little bit spicy, but 42.

Dave Dye (02:25:11):
Yeah, it was good.

Lauren Marshall (02:25:12):
Yeah, it was really nice. Yeah,

Dave Dye (02:25:15):
We got 41 tomorrow. 39 today.

Leigh Chalker (02:25:22):
Pass Good

Dave Dye (02:25:23):
Times. Getting the weather you had.

Isaac George (02:25:25):
Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:25:25):
Not a big fan.

Dave Dye (02:25:28):
Quick was just saying it was hot in Adelaide today. It was hot here. Alright.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:25:44):
Excuse me. I download some things. Sorry, people.

Dave Dye (02:25:47):
What are you working on, Zach?

Isaac George (02:25:50):
I’m working on my presents cover.

Dave Dye (02:25:55):
Oh, that what you held up before. That’s looking really good. All right. The fo,

Isaac George (02:26:05):
So Shalon.

Dave Dye (02:26:08):
Oh yeah.

Isaac George (02:26:10):
FO and Ed’s

Dave Dye (02:26:12):
Dragon.

Morgan ‘The’ Quaid (02:26:14):
Cool. That’s

Dave Dye (02:26:15):
Cool. Yeah, looking great. Who’s,

Isaac George (02:26:21):
Sorry, I’ve got it. So Shalon is the only one that notices that Vivian’s not there and the demon just like pointy spear. Yay.

Dave Dye (02:26:32):
I was going to say, where’s Vivian?

Isaac George (02:26:36):
I put Bronwyn in this one.

Dave Dye (02:26:38):
Yeah. Keep

Leigh Chalker (02:26:40):
Having a break.

Dave Dye (02:26:50):
Just coming in along guys.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:26:56):
I’m just going

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:26:57):
To,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:26:58):
Ah, there we go.

Dave Dye (02:27:02):
Is everyone on holidays or is, are people still working

Leigh Chalker (02:27:08):
Holidays?

Dave Dye (02:27:10):
That’s

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:27:10):
Good. No holidays

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:27:11):
Here.

Dave Dye (02:27:13):
No holidays for Ciz.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:27:15):
No holidays for Siz. I’m working after this.

Isaac George (02:27:22):
I’ve got two commissions I have to finish.

Dave Dye (02:27:25):
Alright.

Isaac George (02:27:26):
I’m still working away.

Dave Dye (02:27:28):
You got deadlines on those

Isaac George (02:27:31):
One? I have to have for Monday.

Dave Dye (02:27:36):
Okay. Big one.

Isaac George (02:27:40):
It’s just a head sketch of someone.

Dave Dye (02:27:44):
Okay. It’s just

Isaac George (02:27:46):
The likeness takes me a while. It’s with cop, but it’s the likeness that takes a while.

Dave Dye (02:27:54):
I find sometimes when I do mostly I do caricatures nowadays, but even when I was doing portraits, when I do the pencil drawing, they don’t quite have what I want. But once you start putting the colour and toned and you start putting the things that aren’t, haven’t got a hard line because when you’re doing the hard line, because you’ve got to be careful not to put too many of in there. But once you start modelling the shadow under the eyes or side of the face and that’s when the likeness will really start to be where you want.

Isaac George (02:28:32):
Yeah. I tend to get the likeness down once I start colouring. Yeah,

Dave Dye (02:28:39):
You might be a bit worried that it’s not there, but it probably is. It’s just got to get that colour in there in the right spots.

Isaac George (02:28:48):
She can kind of correct. If you drew the nose a bit wrong, you can kind of correct it with the colouring a little bit.

Dave Dye (02:28:58):
Do you put a black line around or you just leave it pencil, whatever?

Isaac George (02:29:04):
I do my pencil and I rub it. So there’s a faint outline. Then I start colouring with the, I do the grey tones to do all the structure in the face. Then I’ll ink it and then I’ll put the colour over the top.

Dave Dye (02:29:20):
Oh, so you still are inking a black line

Isaac George (02:29:24):
For the lines in the face and stuff? I’ll outline.

Dave Dye (02:29:31):
Yeah. Yeah. Well I do that for caricatures, but portraits, I’m not too sure whether I’d do that or not. But it depends on your style and what you do. I’d be interested to see what you take a photo mate and show us.

Isaac George (02:29:50):
Will,

Dave Dye (02:29:50):
Do you got any examples there of your portraits? It’s a portrait, is it?

Isaac George (02:29:58):
Yeah, but it’s in the other room. I’ll send you a photo once I’m done. Yeah,

Dave Dye (02:30:07):
I used to want to be a fine artist. You are a

Isaac George (02:30:11):
Fine artist Dave. You’re a very fine artist. Dave.

Dave Dye (02:30:16):
You’re

Isaac George (02:30:16):
More than fine.

Dave Dye (02:30:18):
I used to want to be a landscape painter or in a portrait painter and all that sort of stuff. Figure painting. So I did a lot of oil and study, studied a lot of that stuff for years.

Isaac George (02:30:31):
What I learned at tafe. Then I did some more of it at uni, but it was predominantly graphic design at uni. I can go between the two.

Dave Dye (02:30:43):
Yeah, yeah.

Isaac George (02:30:45):
Which is helpful.

Dave Dye (02:30:49):
Yeah, well I think it helps my drawing a lot. Having that years of trying to get likenesses and all that sort of thing. I think it helps a lot. Figure drawing, landscape drawing. It’s helped a lot. Enjoyed it. I used Enjoy it. Had a watercolour for me wife the other day. Yeah

Isaac George (02:31:14):
Mate. I do watercolour just going to my head. Can’t wrap.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:31:19):
I love that watercolour of the three of us. It’s awesome. Dave. Dave is Superman, not Dave. Sorry. Zach is Superman. He loves it. He loves it. I’m just stirring Lauren. I wanted to actually, I invited you specially not to target you or anything, but when I first started all this, you were one of the most supportive people for what I was doing than anyone else. I don’t know if you realise that, but when I had those days, why am I doing this? It was your support that kept me going, so I wanted to bring you on to say thank you for that. So yeah, I’ve always been really appreciative of that. You were there from day dot when I was like nothing. You just liked what I was trying to do before I was even doing it and that was awesome. So

Lauren Marshall (02:32:12):
Spark in the shame.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:32:17):
Good on you Lauren. So I just wanted to say thanks for that. I wouldn’t be where I’m now if I hadn’t have had that support from you, that got me through, why am I doing this times? So that was pretty cool. So know someone was supporting me from right at day dot.

Lauren Marshall (02:32:32):
No, you’ve got to give yourself a big pat on the back. It’s a huge achievement. What Comex has actually produced over the past 12 months and considering it was just sort of like a directory that you were kind of going for. I think the collaboration between all the people that you made the connections with has sort of manifested this huge world almost and avenues for people to connect a little bit more, especially during Covid times. But yeah, there’s a reason that people want to support you and there’s a reason that I definitely saw that it was something worthwhile in what you were doing. So kudos to you, dude. You absolutely smashed it and she’d be very proud where you are.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:33:14):
Well said. Thank you very much. Yeah, that’s right. Well see. Well, speaking of hammering things out and so forth, you’ve got a Kickstarter coming up very, very soon. How far away we looking?

Lauren Marshall (02:33:29):
I’m still on target for the fourth to be released. The

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:33:32):
Fourth. That’s right. I remember you telling me that. Yep,

Lauren Marshall (02:33:34):
Yep. Everything’s sort of ready to go. I’m looking at the Kickstarter now and just sort of double checking everything and just waiting for sample pages to come back and I can letter them and it’s pretty much good to go. So unless they get delayed a little bit, then I think we’ll still be on track for Tuesday and then yeah, it’d be all full steam ahead, which will be exciting.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:33:57):
That’d be awesome. So that video you sent, is that ready to go? Can I play that?

Lauren Marshall (02:34:02):
You can play that if you want. Yeah, sure.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:34:04):
I will play that then, which is an ad. Is it?

Voice Over (02:34:12):
Your choices lie with me. It is an illusion of choice. Of course it is. You’re smart enough to know that I am the only path in the end for everyone.

Dave Dye (02:35:11):
Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:35:13):
That figure is amazing. Yeah,

Lauren Marshall (02:35:16):
I was going to say that. So good. We’ve got the little resin printer at home. That was one of the test prints that we did and we expensive, we turned because you can set how thick each layer it is because basically with a resin printer, it dips it and cures it and we set it right down to, I think it was 0.01 mil. It comes out really good and looking forward to getting those out, which cool.

Dave Dye (02:35:45):
You could see even she is reaching for the gun or what is it? You can just see the gaps between her fingers as she’s reaching into her pocket or something. What’s her right

Lauren Marshall (02:36:00):
Doing? Just a little bit of a movement. It’s an old design that I did, one of the original designs I did for Lana for the previous Kickstarter. That was a good two and a half years ago, but I thought that might be caused a little homage to that and he did a really good job. He smashed it.

Dave Dye (02:36:17):
Very detailed. Yeah. Amazing. Fantastic. So that’s probably about as big as you can print, is it?

Lauren Marshall (02:36:26):
That’s the biggest, yeah, so I think sitting at 200 mil about, but I think we’re going to do about one 10 mil just for shipping purposes, but I will have a reward if anybody’s got a 3D printer at home. It can be used on any sort as long as you’ve got the programme to get it going and that could be a back reward and you can just print it off at home to save on postage and stuff, so that’s cool. Little bonus. Yeah,

Leigh Chalker (02:36:57):
Sorry,

Dave Dye (02:36:57):
Two and a half inches

Leigh Chalker (02:36:59):
Disappeared.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:37:01):
I had to convert it to inches. You age buddy.

Dave Dye (02:37:11):
Hey

Leigh Chalker (02:37:11):
Guys, I’m going to rock and roll. I hope you have a wonderful new year. It’s been a great pleasure seeing you and meeting you over the last 12 months and stuff, but yes, been drawing all day, late night and I’m going and chill out. So,

Dave Dye (02:37:29):
Alright mate,

Leigh Chalker (02:37:30):
See you later. You’re going to

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:37:31):
Go out on a video as well, my friend. You’re going to go out on a video as well. See you later buddy. Catch you later. Happy

Dave Dye (02:37:37):
New year, Lee.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:37:38):
Happy a new year.

Voice Over (02:37:45):
Welcome to the city of Bustle. My home of 32 years, I met my wife here, my son was born here. I live in the poor and wretched industrial depths in these filthy lower levels. Sunlight is a luxury we know nothing about.

Dave Dye (02:38:30):
Yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:38:31):
Share that. Awesome.

Leigh Chalker (02:38:33):
Thank you. Good stuff.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:38:35):
Thank Lee.

Leigh Chalker (02:38:36):
Alright, see you later guys.

Dave Dye (02:38:39):
Cheers.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:38:44):
Yeah, so the fourth thing, awesome.

Lauren Marshall (02:38:47):
Yeah, it’s going to be a nice hectic January for me. Start the year off right?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:38:53):
I have a funny feeling. I’ve got you on the Wednesday. Have we made that Lana week? I can’t remember. Yeah, you think I’d be more organised than this?

Dave Dye (02:39:03):
You said we’d drawing Lana next Friday.

Lauren Marshall (02:39:06):
On Friday, yeah,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:39:07):
Yeah, on Friday. But I think I probably hope I confirmed with you if I did organise to bring you in for a Wednesday show. I just can’t remember which one. I can’t remember which email I put all the timet in.

Dave Dye (02:39:22):
Is that CCH you’re talking about?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:39:25):
No, no, no, no. The Wednesday show. Oz Comic show.

Dave Dye (02:39:30):
What’s the fancy name for that?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:39:33):
Just the old comic show.

Dave Dye (02:39:34):
Oh, okay. Fancy.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:39:38):
Nice and fancy because we’ve planned a few of those, but I think I might’ve forgot in my rush to do things to actually confirm

Dave Dye (02:39:51):
It mightn’t hurt to have it the following week or even the week after. How long was the start

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:39:56):
Again? No, no, that’s right. I remember now. I’ve been asked by someone else to do those first two weeks, so the third week I was going to invite to, yeah,

Lauren Marshall (02:40:05):
We’re only doing a 20 day campaign nice and short, so they’ll probably

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:40:08):
Oh, that’ll be perfect then. That’ll be near the end of your campaign.

Lauren Marshall (02:40:11):
Yeah.

Dave Dye (02:40:12):
Alright, that’s good.

Lauren Marshall (02:40:15):
Exciting.

Dave Dye (02:40:19):
Yes, that should be good.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:40:22):
So that’d be awesome. I mean I’ve been waiting for issue two for a long time, but issue one hanging out for more.

Dave Dye (02:40:30):
Good issue. I haven’t bought issue one yet, so I’ll get both in one hit.

Lauren Marshall (02:40:34):
Get the bundle, do it. Oh nice. I think I had to get into the habit of starting to say no to a lot of people because I just kept myself way too busy, so I was kept doing other people’s projects, which is fine. I love it. But yeah, I sort of neglected my own creativity a little bit there, so

Dave Dye (02:40:53):
Yeah, that’s what happens.

Lauren Marshall (02:40:54):
2022, not being like that.

Dave Dye (02:40:57):
Yeah, it’s hard to say no, but when you’ve got, I’ve put off lots of things that I wanted to have done now and I put ’em off to do other people’s projects or whatever. I enjoyed doing them and got paid for ’em, so that’s alright. That’s always a good thing. I get more money from that than I do from printing and doing all my own, but still as a creative you want to do your own stuff as well.

Lauren Marshall (02:41:33):
Yeah, a hundred percent.

Dave Dye (02:41:35):
Yeah. Hopefully this year I’ll get a few of those things knocked over, although I’m going through a bit of a slump at the moment. Maybe this break over this festive season, I might come out of it more creative,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:41:51):
Do it Dave, do it.

Dave Dye (02:41:55):
Maybe I’m just a little burned out or something. I just need the break

Lauren Marshall (02:41:59):
Out. It’s always the end of you.

Dave Dye (02:42:02):
Yeah, sometimes you just got to have a break. So what are you working on at the moment, Lauren?

Lauren Marshall (02:42:14):
Just editing the Kickstarter and stuff really. I’ve got a couple of stretch goals. I just kind of did a preliminary sketch for it, like a limited edition art print and stuff, but just trying to keep it simple and low key. I’m trying not to stress myself out just in general. Keep it chill for a little bit just because getting back to work next week as well, so get back into the swing of things and get back to the gym and look after myself again.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:42:43):
Lots of things.

Dave Dye (02:42:46):
You’ve been having some Pav and Christmas cake and all that sort of stuff.

Lauren Marshall (02:42:51):
Plenty of food. Yeah, definitely.

Dave Dye (02:42:55):
It’s the only time of the year you do it, so make them most of it because

Lauren Marshall (02:42:59):
Calories don’t count at Christmas. They count in January though when they come sneaking back.

Dave Dye (02:43:05):
That’s it. Have you got anyone helping you with the Kickstarter or are you doing it all on your Pat Malone?

Lauren Marshall (02:43:14):
No, it’s the same team again, so it’s still doing the work.

Dave Dye (02:43:19):
Tanya,

Lauren Marshall (02:43:20):
Tanya and Kaylene as well. So Tanya is free for next Friday to jump in as well to be Oh, awesome. She’s the writer. Be nice to meet her from the series and she’s just got a lot more insight about it in terms of I’m not a writer, which I’ve said many times before, but she’s got this whole map of the world and storyline and arcs all in her head, so she’d good to pick her brain a little bit on that and Kaylin as I’ve met before as well, so she’s doing all the colouring for it because she’s quite magical with that, which is really cool and it takes a little bit of load off myself.

Dave Dye (02:43:57):
Yeah, it makes it good when you’ve got good colorist

Lauren Marshall (02:44:02):
Makes it, I feel like my colouring skills have become a lot better this year, but it’s just so time consuming for me and she loves it and does a fantastic job. I’d rather keep supporting other creators at the same time.

Dave Dye (02:44:18):
Yep, yep, that’s right. Yeah. Have you met Jeff Tis

Lauren Marshall (02:44:25):
No.

Dave Dye (02:44:25):
You know Jeff, I’m pretty sure he’s in WA and he does a lot of colouring for comic creators. I suppose he’s Oh, look him up. Oh, cool. Jeff with a J, which is a show sometimes. I’ve seen his name come up. Yeah, JEFF, Jeff Tis EDIS.

Lauren Marshall (02:44:47):
Yeah. Cool.

Dave Dye (02:44:48):
Yeah, he does a lot of stuff. I don’t know, you may meet him around, I don’t know if he goes to the ComicCon, if you ever get another ComicCon. I don’t know when that’s going to happen. I got a message from over saying that, getting on the, they’re going to try and getting the early birds if you can. So you get a table for your early bird, get in there early, hook your early bird, it’ll be cheap.

Lauren Marshall (02:45:18):
Yeah. Comic con’s meant to, meant to happen in March here on what I last read, so fingers crossed and actually goes ahead.

Dave Dye (02:45:29):
I’ve

Lauren Marshall (02:45:29):
Got a whole stack of prints in here that I got done and they’re just not being missed.

Dave Dye (02:45:34):
Hope they’re not dated.

Lauren Marshall (02:45:36):
No, thank God. Now that

Dave Dye (02:45:38):
21, I’ve

Lauren Marshall (02:45:39):
Learned that in print you never put dates on anything because they’ll be stuffed.

Dave Dye (02:45:46):
Yeah, I think the first issue with Mason ta I put out to put a price on that one and no, not doing that either to test the water a bit first and then before I start f flunking them, but yeah, keep dates out. Yeah. Well that’s pretty good.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:46:11):
What about you Nick?

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:46:13):
What’s up

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:46:14):
Quick, Nick, what’s your big plans for 2022?

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:46:18):
I don’t know. I’m finishing my presents Noab book right now. The deadlines in a few hours and I’m colouring. I’m just trying to get it done and it’s a bgy story. And having finished Bgy, the Bgy book recently too, I’m looking forward to just not drawing buds for a while. Yeah. And I was saying to Rob, I can see my skills getting better and my drawings getting better, but mouths and noses I’ve been neglecting because I just draw beaks all the time. Yeah, I can just sense my brain going, no, I haven’t worked that out yet, mate. So got to get that.

Dave Dye (02:47:15):
Are all the characters in the Detective budgie? Are they all birds?

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:47:19):
Yeah, everyone’s a bird, right? The real hook of budgie is that everyone’s a bird with arms and hands and stuff, but Bgy Hass got wings, so he’s different

Dave Dye (02:47:30):
And

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:47:31):
He’s treated different.

Dave Dye (02:47:34):
Okay,

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:47:34):
So it’s like he’s cursed as well.

Dave Dye (02:47:37):
So you’ve been getting some hand drawing in and that sort of thing? Legs and,

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:47:40):
Yeah. Well even with budgie you can kind of skip drawing hands a lot of the time as well, but then it’s tend to focus on other people’s hands because he doesn’t have ’em and he looks at them and stuff. He’s always watching and thinking about hands. There’s lots of hand jokes. People try to shake his hands and stuff like that. He gets

Dave Dye (02:48:00):
Nervous pretty good. Are you running a quick kickstart

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:48:11):
QuickStarter kick? You can buy Budgie right now through the budgie.com and I sent as well, so you can also

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:48:21):
Yep, they just arrived. They just arrived. I’ve set ’em up, I’ve got a bag ’em bought ’em and get some information to put ’em on the site and they’ll be ready for the shop.

Dave Dye (02:48:33):
Buy ’em through the shop.

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (02:48:34):
Yeah, get a whole bunch of Comex stuff and that’s the plan.

Dave Dye (02:48:39):
Alright, I’ll visit the shop in the new year, pick up a few others. I’ll probably do that

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:48:48):
Tomorrow. That’ll probably be my job for tomorrow actually, to

Dave Dye (02:48:51):
Do that. You’ve got a few other new titles come in?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:48:56):
I’ve got one. Oh, I can’t remember his name. Crystal Skull Saga.

Dave Dye (02:49:05):
Okay. That

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:49:05):
One’s cool. I like that one. Yeah, he brought them around a while ago. I just haven’t had, I’ve been waiting for the synopsis and stuff so I can put ’em in the store. But yeah, also just one of those things, I’ve just been busy, so that’ll be job for tomorrow as well. I’ve put ’em in when I put budget in.

Dave Dye (02:49:27):
I’ll have a look next week and see, put an order in. I’d like to get a

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:49:34):
Couple. There’s been a few. I’m not pushing it as hard as I should. I really should be out there telling people, add your stuff to my store. I mean, I’m getting some duck nebula.

Dave Dye (02:49:49):
Oh

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:49:49):
Yeah, that’s in the post at the moment, so I’ll be getting that sometime next week.

Dave Dye (02:49:53):
Right, Ry

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:49:58):
Send the whole box to me. So a whole bit Ry stuff. Ry,

Dave Dye (02:50:02):
Yeah.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:50:03):
S about to send me a heap of stuff once they’re just waiting for the comics from their Kickstarter to be printed so they can send them more than one batch.

Dave Dye (02:50:09):
Oh right. Yeah.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:50:12):
So we’ll have a whole heap of every books in there soon.

Dave Dye (02:50:16):
That’ll be a big box when that comes, mate.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:50:19):
Yeah, it will be, I reckon. And I’m still waiting on some, so I ran out of bags, so I’ve still got a bag and board about, I dunno, about a hundred, a hundred of the nu. So for issue

Dave Dye (02:50:41):
Two, I’m working on a new cover for you. New cover for noir number

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:50:50):
One. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry, I forgot about that. For when we reprint. Yes. Yeah.

Dave Dye (02:50:55):
Oh, new number one. When do you want that?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:50:59):
No rush at the moment. It’s just once we sell out of all the different covers we’ve currently got, we’ll go to the new reprint cover.

Dave Dye (02:51:06):
Right.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:51:07):
So I need to advertise that as well. So anyone listening here, there’s not many of you, but with all the variant covers that we do for presents and presents new R, what we print during the Kickstarter or the pre-order launch, however we end up doing it at the moment. It’s just been Kickstarters. That’ll be it. So if there’s 50 or 40, I think this time there’s 30 of each cover. 30 of each, yeah, 30 of each cover. I think it was this time. That’ll be it for those covers and then there’ll be a reprint cover for every reprint after that. It’ll just be the one cover. There won’t be four variances after that. Yeah.

Dave Dye (02:51:51):
You’re printing through Baden and Jefferies, aren’t you? Do they do a print on demand thing so you can print 10 or 20 or whatever like that? Or is that

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:52:02):
I don’t think they do. We’ve never had an order that small, so I’ve never needed to ask. But I get the impression they start at 50

Dave Dye (02:52:09):
50. Right? Yeah. Yeah.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:52:12):
That’s just a guess because when he gives a quote, he gives all the different ranges and the smallest range is 50. Yeah.

Dave Dye (02:52:20):
Right. Yep.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:52:22):
So that’s a bit of an assumption. So I could be wrong, but

Dave Dye (02:52:25):
Yeah. Yeah. Oh might be right. Yeah. 50 is a good number. You sell them over time. Easy enough. Yeah. Are you going to go to a few conventions this year?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:52:41):
I want to go to all the Brisbane ones. I’m hoping Zach will go to all the Sydney ones and then we’ve just got to organise people for the rest of the country because I can’t make it away from here. That’s a cost I can’t incur at this point in time, but I can definitely get to the thing. I’m trying to organise some sort of system where I can help someone else with their table in another state if they promote come stuff.

Dave Dye (02:53:13):
Right. Okay. Well I’m hoping to get to a few this year, so definitely do Melbourne and Adelaide.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:53:23):
Oh, awesome.

Dave Dye (02:53:27):
We can talk about that later if you like.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:53:30):
Yeah, that’d be awesome.

Dave Dye (02:53:32):
I’d like to do Sydney. I’ve never done Sydney.

Isaac George (02:53:35):
Sydney is a fun.

Lauren Marshall (02:53:37):
Sydney’s

Dave Dye (02:53:38):
Good. Good. Yeah. Yep. It’s a long way to go. I always drive to where I go. Then I’ve got me, I don’t know, I’ve never flown with a load of comics to sell, but some people do that. They’ve got to do that. But

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:53:55):
Yes, they only option. Yeah,

Dave Dye (02:53:58):
I’m in the country, so I’ve got to fly from here to Melbourne. I might be able to go straight to Sydney actually. I’m not too sure what the price would be. Might be, I dunno, 160 bucks per

Isaac George (02:54:16):
Chances are next year the flights will be cheap so they can start getting people

Dave Dye (02:54:20):
Moving

Isaac George (02:54:21):
Back on the planes.

Dave Dye (02:54:23):
Yeah, well

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:54:23):
That makes sense. Yeah. Fingers crossed.

Dave Dye (02:54:26):
I know some people fly to Perth to, for the Supernovas and the ComicCon, it’s a long way to go and you’ve got to be hopeful for get some

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:54:39):
Good side. I’d love to get to the stage where I’m going to all of them. That’d be pretty fricking awesome. Oh,

Dave Dye (02:54:42):
That’d be great. That would be

Isaac George (02:54:44):
Cool.

Lauren Marshall (02:54:44):
There was one stint I did three in a row. It was Perth, Brisbane in Melbourne or something. It was back to back weekends.

Isaac George (02:54:52):
Oh wow.

Lauren Marshall (02:54:53):
Broke me a little bit.

Dave Dye (02:54:56):
Where were you living then? Laura?

Lauren Marshall (02:54:59):
In Perth.

Dave Dye (02:55:00):
You lived in Perth then? Wow.

Lauren Marshall (02:55:03):
Yeah, I tried to do every single one that year, which was cool. I then cut back the following year. That was when it was peaking and it was absolutely booming and everyone was spending heaps of money and it was not that money’s the be all and end all, but it’s good to make ends meet and everyone was excited and it was fresh. There wasn’t too many drama or anything like that. That was a good year. And then I kind of went downhill from there a little bit, but hoping everybody sort of comes back with a vengeance this year.

Dave Dye (02:55:39):
Fingers crossed. Hopefully people have said that’ve been to the couple of conventions at the end of this year that’s just ending that they’ve been really good. Well, patronised people have been going to buy comics and

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:55:56):
That’s good to know.

Dave Dye (02:55:58):
Yeah, yeah, that’s right. I know the last, I think it was the last, I know I did the Adelaide Comic Convention. It was one day. It was the Adelaide Comic and Toy Fair and they were really good. The people, they had to, there’s limited number, they could come through the door, so they had people out the front. They had to queue up and wait until someone came out before the next one could come in. So there’s limited numbers inside the building. The people were doing it and when they came in, they actually bought stuff. That’s awesome. It was good. Adelaide crowds are pretty good that way.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:56:40):
I’ve got to look into all the smaller ones.

Dave Dye (02:56:43):
Yeah, well the smaller ones sometimes work out a lot better because

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:56:47):
Actually go off. You can meet a lot more people. You can talk to a lot more people and more people there interested in indie comics than pop culture. Some of the big ones are all about and they cost a lot less, which is also a bonus.

Dave Dye (02:57:01):
The tables are lot

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:57:01):
The tables. Yeah. I was talking to someone and they said they went to a supernova that was 70 many hundred dollars for the table and then they went to a local fair type thing and that was $20 for the table and they sold more at the 20 table one than they sold at the supernova. So I thought, yeah, well, I mean my site also is meant to document all the events that happened, which is something I’ve got to get on top of once now the covid is starting to not be such a huge thing anymore, even though it’s been a huge thing, it’s been less of a huge thing, if that makes sense. It’s a bit confusing. I’m trying to follow it and I’m getting a bit confused. This strain is more contagious but makes you less sick or something someone was telling me.

Dave Dye (02:57:58):
Well, apparently it seems to be because I think I saw that New South Wales got 23,000 cases today.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:58:07):
Yeah.

Dave Dye (02:58:08):
Is that

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:58:09):
Right? It makes sense I guess because at the end of the day, a virus is trying to replicate, make more of itself and survive and killing the host is a really bad way to do that. So

Dave Dye (02:58:20):
Being

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:58:20):
More contagious and less fatal, it makes sense for a virus to mutate that way.

Dave Dye (02:58:26):
Yeah, yeah. So anyway, the New South Wales government’s just leaving everything open I think and just saying Go for it. I think it’s

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (02:58:35):
Too late now.

Dave Dye (02:58:36):
Yeah, they’ve let it go too. I suppose. They’re

Isaac George (02:58:40):
Literally

Dave Dye (02:58:41):
Worried that they’re going to get a big rush of people into the hospital and not be able to treat them. Be worried about,

Isaac George (02:58:50):
Well, I’m in New South Wales and my postcode today alone had 50 people.

Dave Dye (02:58:55):
60, yeah,

Isaac George (02:58:56):
50 cases alone today.

Dave Dye (02:58:59):
Yeah. Yeah, that’s a lot. It

Isaac George (02:59:02):
Was like, okay, this is me locking my doors again.

Dave Dye (02:59:07):
Hey, I was going to ask you Zach, when’s the Wollongong Comic Con

Isaac George (02:59:13):
Comic Gong is application in January, assuming that it runs ahead because it got cancelled the last two years.

Dave Dye (02:59:25):
Yeah, well they call it Comic Gong or something.

Isaac George (02:59:27):
Comic Gong comic as in gong for Wollongong. Comic Gong

Dave Dye (02:59:31):
I used to live at now, mate. I know the South Coast pretty good.

Isaac George (02:59:37):
I go to NARA every now and again.

Dave Dye (02:59:38):
Do you? Yeah, I’ve

Isaac George (02:59:41):
Got a printer there who does a lot of my stuff.

Dave Dye (02:59:44):
Alright. Yeah, I think I saw Drop or what is it? Jay had drop there. Mentioned something about comics too. He’s got some sort of connection with someone down at Nira anyway. And what’s the table price at the comic gone?

Isaac George (03:00:03):
The last one was 80 bucks.

Dave Dye (03:00:06):
80. Wow.

Isaac George (03:00:07):
Yeah, it must be alright. When it first started it was cheaper but it started really gaining momentum so the table prices went up, but the last one, it was pretty much all cosplay, so no one really made money at all. It was literally like I made my table cost back. Yay. Team.

Dave Dye (03:00:30):
Yeah, still

Isaac George (03:00:31):
It was off year. That year was

Dave Dye (03:00:34):
Well 80, still a lot better than the big ones.

Isaac George (03:00:40):
Supernova, when I did it, I got it on the early bird, probably under, and I think it was 260 or something,

Dave Dye (03:00:48):
2 75

Isaac George (03:00:49):
For the three days, something like that. And then you have to pay for the insurance, which is like a hundred and something I think. Depends where you get it through.

Dave Dye (03:01:01):
You can get it from super

Isaac George (03:01:02):
Over. You’re pretty much there for promotion and hopefully make your table back.

Dave Dye (03:01:09):
Yeah,

Isaac George (03:01:09):
That’s pretty much super over.

Dave Dye (03:01:12):
I think the one I mentioned in Adelaide, I think a table there was 50 bucks

Isaac George (03:01:19):
Too bad

Dave Dye (03:01:20):
Paper cuts is $50 and then refunded after the event or 40 Really? Or something like that. Yeah. Oh,

Isaac George (03:01:30):
Is it just to make sure you come to the table? Yeah,

Dave Dye (03:01:32):
Just to make sure you turn up. Wow, that’s

Isaac George (03:01:37):
Good. That’s awesome.

Dave Dye (03:01:39):
It’s a one day event. Although they do have a number of, it’s like a four day event really. They have different days that there’s different things going on. They have meetings of comics and

Isaac George (03:01:56):
We’ll do a book launch or interview

Dave Dye (03:01:58):
Book launch. Yeah,

Isaac George (03:01:59):
It’s all free and you check it out. It’s all

Dave Dye (03:02:01):
Great comic readings where they read everyone. So it goes over a few days and I think the final day is the actual comic spelling market. Comic market,

Isaac George (03:02:15):
Okay.

Dave Dye (03:02:16):
Yeah, so that’s a good one to get to if you can. Some people come across from Melbourne and that for that I think, and maybe even Perth. I had an idea Bruce Mutar might’ve gone across from Perth for this year’s one and I was going to ask you Zach, the comic gong, is that one day or two days?

Isaac George (03:02:41):
One.

Dave Dye (03:02:42):
One day. Oh okay.

Isaac George (03:02:44):
It’s the second Saturday of May normally.

Dave Dye (03:02:49):
Okay. Right. Do they have an early bird on that or straight Flat rate. Flat rate, yeah.

Isaac George (03:02:57):
It’s straight flat rate I think. And you can get more than one table. So I think if you get two tables, it doesn’t double. I think it’s like 120. Oh

Dave Dye (03:03:07):
Okay.

Isaac George (03:03:08):
Or a hundred or something like that. Because there’s stores that rock up, there’s wrestling, there’s cos, there’s Dunking Lights up,

Dave Dye (03:03:23):
Come

Isaac George (03:03:23):
And wrestle Dunking. Yeah,

Dave Dye (03:03:26):
You the slow period mate get in there and knock a few heads,

Isaac George (03:03:30):
But they split over wrestling. Ong Gallery, the library and the town hall. So it’s spread over, but there’s stuff in the library. They do a really good job of it, but hopefully comes back full force.

Dave Dye (03:03:50):
People, they sell all sorts of stuff. Like they sell the toys and the,

Isaac George (03:03:55):
There’s toys, there’s people make bow ties and stuff. There’s Lego, there’s people who sell film cells. So it’s a moment from animation and stuff. It’s a good mix of stuff and cool everyone mostly everyone’s really nice to each other and stuff and you kind of get the person going around and buying a bit here and a bit there just to throw some money around to everyone. So you kind of do the same.

Dave Dye (03:04:28):
Always good to have people like that. And I suppose you get a few people down from Sydney too to sell this stuff.

Isaac George (03:04:36):
Yeah, one year Jamie came down. Jamie, I don’t know, he came down from Sydney to do it. There’s a few Sydney people have come down, but the Wollongong council library who runs it, they normally try and keep it Wollongong ish.

Dave Dye (03:04:54):
Locals. They like to have locals. Do they? That’s their preference. Okay. Probably fill the table with as many locals and when they run out of them, that’s when they’ll start taking the

Isaac George (03:05:04):
Outline. I get some. There’s some cool books I’ve got there. I’ve met Tim Styles through it. I met Evan Newbie. That’s where I met Jay from Drop Air originally. I think you do wind up meeting a lot of cool people.

Dave Dye (03:05:22):
Oh yeah, that’s what I was saying to Morgan, get along, get along when you can because they are good. You will meet people and swap ideas and all that sort of stuff. Just mix with your fellow creators. Always good. This is really good way of doing it as well, but it’s a lot easier

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:05:49):
In person’s always better.

Dave Dye (03:05:51):
Yeah. Yeah. Face to face a lot better.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:05:56):
That’s why I’m never going to Bathurst Duncan scares me through the screen. It’s all good. I’ve seen Ben Kitty

Dave Dye (03:06:05):
Man’s crazy. He’s about six eight too mate. He will tower over the top of you. Six,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:06:13):
Eight.

Dave Dye (03:06:15):
Yeah,

Duncan Pranevicius (03:06:18):
Just sort of hiding in corners and lurk around and talk every now and then.

Dave Dye (03:06:23):
Thin kitty. So being kid is really alter ego

Duncan Pranevicius (03:06:30):
Honestly. Yeah, kind of a little bit.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:06:35):
Now I’m more scared.

Dave Dye (03:06:36):
Yeah, I really am worried. That’s

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (03:06:41):
A good question. I’m always asked if I am my characters and stuff. What about you Lauren? Do people ask, are you Lana? People ever ask you that?

Dave Dye (03:06:52):
Partially maybe. I think I want to

Lauren Marshall (03:06:54):
Be as gutsy as she is a little bit, but I have always said that she’s sort of bits and pieces of things that I admire or show interest in. I’ve always been fan of the broody characters like Hellboy or something like that that got an attitude or something. So I feel like it’s drawn from that a lot and a lot of anime and stuff like that that I’m really into. So yeah, I suppose partially, pardon me, I have had purple hair as well, so I suppose.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:07:28):
Oh well there you go.

Dave Dye (03:07:29):
That works. What about you Zach? Are you Bronwyn?

Isaac George (03:07:36):
Yeah,

Dave Dye (03:07:37):
I’m sure he’s got the costume. Hang on,

Isaac George (03:07:39):
Lemme get the red wig.

Dave Dye (03:07:42):
Sweet.

Isaac George (03:07:45):
No, there’s bits and pieces like Lauren said, it’s, it’s kind of like the little love letters to bits and pieces you grew up with. Then you throw in your ideas and morals and stuff like that in the character as well. And so it’s that. But I can’t rock a costume

Dave Dye (03:08:10):
If you try, we’d be interested to see when you try mate, take photos. Pardon? Take photos. We want to see when you try and can start the comics only fans.

Isaac George (03:08:26):
It’s not going to happen. Sorry,

Dave Dye (03:08:28):
What about a Halloween episode? We all have to dress up. Dress up as your favourite.

Isaac George (03:08:35):
I’ll dress up as

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:08:36):
ViiV down. That’s an excellent idea. There you go. Dress up as your character. There you go. I’ll be Cirus for the night. Excellent. So my grey beard orange

Dave Dye (03:08:49):
Get carried and make you a costume mate. She pretty handy with her sewing machine.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:08:59):
I don’t know actually.

Dave Dye (03:09:01):
We might find out

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:09:09):
A lot of spandex.

Dave Dye (03:09:11):
Lovely stretchy stuff.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:09:15):
Lots of stretchy stuff for this rather large stomach. Maybe a corset to push it all up into the chest.

Dave Dye (03:09:28):
A corset. Yeah.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:09:32):
Give me that muscular look.

Dave Dye (03:09:33):
Very sexy in waist barrel, chest like Superman.

Isaac George (03:09:43):
I actually have a question for both Duncan and Lauren. For Lauren. In your case that you’re doing book two now, did you look back at book one to get the refresher in your head?

Lauren Marshall (03:09:57):
Yeah.

Isaac George (03:09:58):
Was it like that bit of a shock, like wow, I want to redraw it all?

Lauren Marshall (03:10:03):
Yeah, yeah, a hundred percent. A lot of anatomy stuff and whatever and back then I thought I was the ducks nuts. I was like, yeah boy I can draw anything. I look back at it now and I’m like, God damn, you need some help. But it’s actually really humbling to see as well though. So you kind of move forward a little bit. I’m not willing to change it. It’s part of the history of the series I guess. So almost a collector’s item of cringe worthy goodness for everybody else.

Isaac George (03:10:40):
What about you Duncan? Because I know that you are redrawing entire thing.

Duncan Pranevicius (03:10:45):
Yeah, red redoing the entire thing. I’m pretty much just using the original first issue as just a basis for the, I guess the remake, just sort of taking in and seeing what either works. It doesn’t work sometimes whole pages. I just have to redraw the art and it’s great. Other ones I just scrap the whole damn thing pretty much just, yeah, she uses the basis for the second one expanded upon. Yeah, it’s not just

Lauren Marshall (03:11:19):
Your technical drawing though in terms of drawing faces or hands or whatever, but it’s also like you are conceptualising and also how you the page and how you tell the story. Support.

Duncan Pranevicius (03:11:31):
Yeah, page layout, the composition, the whole thing. Yeah,

Isaac George (03:11:35):
That’s what I found because in my Kickstarter there’s a tier that if I hit a level the stories will be printed for the first time in colour. Not knowing that I had lost the colour files, so I had to scan all the pages and reconstruct the pages. But while I’m reconstructing I’m like the way that I told the story, then I’m like why did I do that? So I’m kind of a little bit course correcting, but it is nice to look back at it and be like, oh, don’t draw like that anymore. Thank God kind of thing.

Dave Dye (03:12:12):
Yeah. Well it’s an opportunity to improve your storytelling suppose Definitely. Somewhere that’s probably,

Duncan Pranevicius (03:12:21):
If you look at my prototype bin Kitty to the one I’m doing now with night and day difference in the art and that was only two years ago. It’s like a huge, huge gigantic improvement.

Dave Dye (03:12:37):
Do

Isaac George (03:12:38):
You find you draw them Lana or Binki different now without realising you’ve really evolved away from how they first appeared?

Lauren Marshall (03:12:51):
I think it’s more time. So if I took back then if I took a lot more time to do it and refine, refine, refine, then I would get it to where I want it. So with the cover page and character conceptualising and stuff like that, but now it’s natural. So I think it’s just bread and butter now pretty much.

Duncan Pranevicius (03:13:12):
Yeah, I’m doing the same. But the general look of her hasn’t changed since I actually first started drawing the character. Just generally it’s gotten a lot sort of cleaner and more natural draw. I can just sort hanging out a picture of a bin kitty instantly because I’m just so used to drawing it every single day.

Dave Dye (03:13:37):
When you look at Calvin and Hobbs and peanuts and all those comics and sl man, I guess they all different now to what they were originally. The artist developed their skills and improved, changed. I feel

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (03:13:59):
Like Garfield’s the best reference for that old Garfield’s really looks like Ben Kittys really chubby and stuff.

Dave Dye (03:14:08):
Yeah, I think a lot of them are like that except the more polished ones. I suppose that the artists that really had the definite right from the very beginning, what they were doing, probably a lot of the artists like Garfield and that they might’ve been doing it. How long has been Garfield been going? 40 years more, something like that. Yeah, some of these comic had been going for 50, 60 years with the peanuts and that Charles Schultz was doing peanuts and he did that all his life. He’d died when he, I don’t know, 80 or 90. I think he’d drawing ’em pretty much right up to the end and the original peanuts, Charlie Brown and Lucy and Linus, they looked a lot different to how they later after a few years. So it’s only natural to change. I find that if I was to go back and I’d be too, I think broad, it’d have to be to change the way I told the story as in the way an angle was on or maybe adding a panel or

Lauren Marshall (03:15:25):
Taking panels

Dave Dye (03:15:25):
Away. Yeah, different viewpoint. A closeup instead of a screenshot or whatever. It’d have to be something like that rather than just redrawing each panel. I think it’d be too bored otherwise just doing that. I’ll be too lazy to actually, yeah,

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (03:15:51):
When I was drawing Bud,

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:15:53):
Oh sorry,

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (03:15:54):
I’ve got a good one. When I was drawing budgie, I used to give him pretty deep harsh eyebrows, quite black. And then as I progressed I started to just develop just a big flapper skin like walls and grommet instead that would animate more instead. So I kind of worked backwards so I was like, oh I like this big skin flap more and I like colouring underneath it more than a dark eyebrow. So that was something I went back and changed while I was drawing budgie.

Dave Dye (03:16:27):
So you did go back and change that, did you?

Nick ‘Quick’ Cleary (03:16:29):
It was during the book though. I didn’t finish it as I was progressing and skills were developing and it was much more fun to animate a big flap of skin. Sometimes it’s just one, sometimes it’s two and they’re like the thing or the whole,

Dave Dye (03:16:45):
Yeah, right. What are you saying sis?

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:16:56):
I was just about to wrap it up. I didn’t want to tie you guys up anymore. I just thought and plus I’ve actually got work to do, so

Dave Dye (03:17:04):
I doing that

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:17:06):
Just in case the boss is actually watching this and he’ll be like, what are you doing Shane? You’re meant to be doing this.

(03:17:13)
So thank you very much for coming along and helping me celebrate the end of this year and to celebrate the beginning of the new one. I’m really looking forward to doing more stuff with all of you guys who could and couldn’t make it with Comex and I’m really looking forward to meeting new people. That’s our big goal for Comex next year is we seem to have become a circle and I want to continue growing that circle. We’ve become very comfortable in our group I think, and I get more people to be part of it’s add another 50

Dave Dye (03:17:51):
People.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:17:52):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Fun. Each week that’ll do 50. Beautiful. That’s 50 more Broan covers.

Dave Dye (03:17:58):
I love it.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:18:03):
So yeah, thank you very much. Thanks for coming in thanks to joining me on this what is basically a holiday.

Dave Dye (03:18:12):
Yeah. Well it’s been good to catch you as before the end of the new year. End of the year, the old year, and welcome in the new year. How far

Lauren Marshall (03:18:21):
Away are you guys from? Pardon? Pardon? Like an hour. You got what? Hour and

Dave Dye (03:18:25):
A half in New South Wales? It’s 10 30. Yeah, 10 30.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:18:30):
So an hour and a half. So two and a half hours for me. Yeah. So I’ve got two and a half hours to finish this project.

Dave Dye (03:18:51):
Well good luck with that S and thanks mate for a good year. I’ve had a great time. It’s been great. Yeah. Awesome.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:18:59):
Yeah, I’ve had a great year. This has been awesome. That’s pretty much all this was about was to celebrate what an awesome year I’ve had and I just wanted to sort of drag you guys into my having awesome year ness

Dave Dye (03:19:10):
Celebration. Didn’t have to drag ard. I was happy to come in, say good day.

Shane ‘Sizzle’ Syddall (03:19:17):
Cool. Well this has a lack of anything else to show as the ending. I’m just going to show the comic show outro. So thank you very much guys. Thank you everyone who watched. Have a great new year, everyone happy New everyone, happy New Year. See you in 2022 and let’s go retro on our goodbye

Dave Dye (03:19:37):
